Just thought I'd sketch up how the balloonie inflatable virus TF might look and progress.What may happen is that the upper layers of the skin begin to rubberise and air starts to build up underneath causing it to inflate away from the main body or limb. The remaining flesh transforms into a sticky gaseous latex that coats and thickens the outer skin, allowing the inflating to continue.
The person affected should have valves inserted to release some of the air to keep the pressures low so the skin pulls less on the non changed body parts and so slow the transformation process, or if they wish, speed up the transformation by raising the pressure triggering the body to respond by upping the process of latexing.

I'm sure all rubber/latex parts are pretty resistant to sharp objects, maybe not to needles but neither do I think that ones inflated skin would tear and thus pop.

what is timeframe? like, how long does the person have before full TF?

So, slowest case scenario, that means with regularly releasing air. Skin on hands and feet start turning shiny and changing colour is day one, within two to three months you can expect to have your hands and feet like the first two of these above. After sixth months the hands and feet will have fully changed, be rather big and cumbersome. At one year it will have worked its way to your knees and elbows and at a year and a half it will have changed your entire arms and legs. At two years you torso will be mid way to being fully inflated with the most progression having happened down at your waist. At two and a half years your body will have mostly inflated and your head will have begun to inflate too. At that point I'd recommend having yourself hooked up to a compressor to have the transformation force completed, which should only take a few minutes by then.
And the quickest I'd say, all that would happen within a year.

While I would like to say it is random, the fact that anyone changes into cartoony animals and not just inflatables of their human selves is suspicicious, so perhaps it is based on something in their mind. So like if you were to realise you were infected and then began to worry too much that you'd turn into a giant banana too much, then you might actually turn into one. XP
