Description

Some time ago I started taking Skillshare courses. I learned something new every day concerning various interests. At the same time, better late than never, I began watching “Game of Thrones”. Eventually, for some time I focused most of my energy on learning new things and then I binged a TV show. This portrait is the outcome.

I was thinking about what to write about this time. Finally, I looked at these two components (developing interests and binging TV shows) and then, a jackpot - the cult of productivity, namely the pressure to not waste time, to self-actualize, to do something productive.

Actually, I’m not sure if what I’m going to write about is a part of this phenomenon. Do intertwining self-worth to how many things you do and a strong need to present yourself as a person with various hobbies belong to the cult of productivity?

To begin with, our value doesn’t depend on the number of activities checked in our calendar. It’s not like if we don’t have these gazillions of interests and besides the most absorbing things (school, college, work) we don’t do a lot then we are not as valuable. In many cases, it all depends on our energy, which isn’t something we can always control. It also depends on many other factors such as finances. Some of the pastimes may be really expensive. We’re valuable even when we do nothing. At least that’s what I believe. I believe that our value depends on the virtues we embrace.

There’s also the pressure to be “an interesting person” in the eyes of others. It’s easily noticeable especially when we meet somebody new. At that moment, what often happens is that we tell each other about our hobbies. And everything’s fine as far as it happens naturally. It’s not so fine when we feel the need to kind of explain ourselves in terms of how many things we do as if we were afraid of being perceived as boring. But why is it that we even try to be perceived somehow anyway? Especially considering the fact that it’s something we can’t control. And it’s not like our actions don’t change anything. It’s more about the fact that everything we do can be judged in so many ways, depending on who’s the judge.

So, all in all, just do what you love and what you have the energy for - that’s already great. Even if it’s all about “doing nothing”. Your value doesn’t depend on the number of your interests, and whether someone will think of you this or that way doesn’t really matter. At the end of the day, there is always someone who thinks this way and those who think that way. Who’s right then?

And what are your thoughts on it? Do you also try to be taken for an interesting person? Or maybe you’re the one who expects others to have various hobbies? I would really like to know!

Take care!
