Description so i've been reading the Alexander the Great books by Mary Renault. i read The Persian Boy first, ironically, and now i'm reading Fire From Heaven, which chronicles Alexander's first 20 years. and i am so not ashamed to say i am totally in love with him. and Hephaistion, and Bagoas too.

um, so, historical figure art! forget Colin Farrell, this is MY Alexander (right) & Hephaistion (left) (Hephaistion was Alexander's best friend; Alexander trusted him completely) . Alexander looks better than Hephaistion here, in my opinion, but oh well. in historical text, Hephaistion was supposedly the taller and "more impressive" of the 2; he had dark blonde hair and dark grey eyes. Alexander had golden blonde hair and grey-blue eyes, and it's well recorded that he was really, really good-looking. plus, for a world-conqueror, he was way ahead of his time--he took prisoners rather than perpetuate wholesale slaughter, and actively discouraged his men from plundering and raping. rather than forcing the cultures he conquered to conform to Macedonian/Greek traditions, he allowed them to keep their own customs and tried to assimilate them into his own behavior.

so anyway. i like this piece. it will be followed up with one of Bagoas, pretty soon. i hope you forgive me for the odd outfit Hephaistion is wearing (that's a gauntlet on his arm), and the random shield Alexander is holding (because i didn't want to draw the rest of his arm). i just want you to know that the clothing is not meant to be as detailed as the skin & hair. i hope you enjoy the fruits of my immense geekdom.

I think Alexander was shorter, and probably would have had more of a warrior's frame?
Great, though!

Proportion issue: the figure on the right is positioned in front, but he's drawn smaller than the one on the left. Though Alex may have been shorter than Hep (pardon my abbreviations), he should still be larger -- head slightly larger than Hep's, and his torso should be wider (if not larger) than Hep's too (even if he is standing sideways). At least, that's how I perceive it.

Other than that, they both look really, really, really amazingly hot. I mean, I'd do them.

I am totally enamoured with how you captured these two. If you look in my gallery, you'll see my visions of Hephy and Alex are much the same. BEAUTIFUL. Please, more Mary Renault art! There isn't nearly enough.

That's wonderful. Their faces have an incredibly amount of personality. Amazing.

Hephaiston's body looks a wee bit too small compared to his head, but both faces and hair look ball-grabbingly good.

Gah, I love the contrast between the super realistic faces and the impressionistic-ish background. Must fave. Guy on the left looks a lot like a character of mine... (so self-centered)

I found you on that oekaki thing! I've been obsessed with Alexander the Great a long time and WELL. This is just awesome. I read part of The Persian Boy, but had to return it to the library and never got it again! Hephaistion was always my favorite over Bagoas anyway!

UH YES SO. This is a-ma-zing. Really. I love it. A lot. Obviously. I especially love the angle of Alexander's chest, and the shadow over it. I'm watching you!

hey, i know who you are! yay for connections.

you oughta read The Persian Boy...but definitely read Fire From Heaven first. <3 it's amazingly frustrating how oblique Renault can be at times, though. i showed this passage to my friend where i was like, "is she trying to say they had sex, or not?!" ahahah. at least in The Persian Boy you KNOW when Alexander and Bagoas are doing the nasty.

anyway, thanks for the favorite and the watch. i shall have to watch you back.

damn. this is a really, but REALLY great piece! the faces are ridiculously awesome. somehow they retain realism but they still show evidence of your own personal style, which is something that i haven't been able to achieve yet. so kudos for that! even though you said that the clothes weren't supposed to be as detail as the hair, i think that possibly adding a little more detail to the rest of the picture would make the composition as a whole more involved. possibly on the arm gauntlet or on the shield, maybe? also, the really dark shadow under Hephaistion's pec seems just a tad too deep. anyhow, great job!

thanks for the comment i may go back & add to the shield and gauntlet, i was originally planning to but then couldn't really figure out what i wanted to do with it, so i didn't.

i'm glad you like it, thanks for the compliments & the valuable suggestions!
