Description
First, magnificent pyramids, now another symbol of Egypt - the Sphinx! The Sphinx has the body of a lion and the head of a god, which was probably modeled after Chephren, the pharaoh who built the Sphinx. Although no one knows for sure why the statue has this unusual figuration, archaeologists speculate that the human head symbolizes intelligence and the lion body symbolizes power. (?) (Last one. Done. )

Has anyone heard the theory that the Sphinx is actually around 10,000 years old and that it originally had the head of a lion? This isn't a theory most archeologists subscribe to, but I think it's fascinating. They claim evidence of rain water damage on the sides shows it was around when Egypt was much wetter and greener than the present day which climatologists know was true about the region in the distant past. Also, the proportions for the head are so odd, that many including myself don't believe it would have been designed that way if the entire Sphinx was created at one time. Just a thought...

It has changed a lot over its history. It has had a beard added and then removed. It has had extensive and very badly done repairs over the years that have drastically changed its look. Being used as an artillery practice target by the Italian army didn't help much either. The state of it is so bad now that most of its features will be gone by the end of the century.
