Description The Secret Thing is revealed! I've spent over a year developing plush toys with posable faces (more pics to come) as well as posable bodies, which I am imaginatively calling tomodachi dolls, Japanese-ish for "friend dolls", working on the idea that they can be emotive. And I like Japanese stuffs.

The first one to be completed is Rudy, a Staggon. Yes, a stag x dragon cross. His eyes roll and have three different pupil types, his eyebrows move, his eyelids shut, his lips are posable and his mouth opens and closes. His ears are also posable, so he's pretty flexible in his range of expressions. The rest of his body is jointed and wired. He is still incredibly squishy, he's by no means a lumpy, sculpted doll.

Design:
Rudy has been designed with all the attention focussing on his head, so his rear end is pretty basic. He will be used for birthday cards, greetings cards, invites and maybe just some silly prints, which will hopefully soon be available in my etsy shop. It is unlikely that any of these will focus on anything other than his head or foreclaws, so there didn't seem much need to overdo the detail on his butt. He uses natural colours and furs to make him more believable.

Made of minky fabric, fleece and faux-fur, his teeth and eyes are hand made. He's a mix of hand and machine stitching. He's about a meter long, and about 30cm tall. I think. I haven't actually measured him.

I apologize for all the watermarks, but he is a one off, never to be sold creation. He's mine, I tell you, mine! So if you see this guy on ebay or anywhere else, it's a fake. He's right here with me.

Tomodachi dolls are currently still very much a work in progress and are NOT being offered as commissions. One day I would like to, but there are things I need to fix. he's a bit... clunky... So I'm aiming for a human doll and a pony, as my next projects. The human doll was the one I started with, but a lot of the problems I had have been sorted in Rudy, so hopefully I can translate it across.
No patterns, no tutorials, no commissions, no trades.

I'd love to make MLP ones! If I do, I'd maybe try and get Hasbro's approval to make one-offs for charity auctions or suchlike, maybe see if they'd help advertise them, dunno if they would. Gilda and Discord would work really well for it.

WOW! That is absolutely incredible. What a great idea - and nice execution, too!

I did read the description, so I know you're not selling anything like this yet, but just for curiosity's sake - do you have any idea what sort of price range you would eventually see setting for something similar to this?

Thank you very much!

Currently, no idea XD Rudy was very much "make it up as I go along", but ideally I'd like them to be around the Β£300 GBP mark for medium sized plushes. They'd probably still be quite a lot of money, I know, but in hours Rudy's worth about Β£1200 .__.'

Still, I have much practicing to do before I'd be happy to sell them. Obviously something of that value would have to be perfect, not just "it'll do".

Thank you very much! I was originally going to make him quite orange, but I thought the more muted tones would look nicer for his intended role on greetings cards XD

vonBorowsky [2014-03-06 16:47:31 +0000 UTC]

As a suggestion, in my opinion, appealing for the "visual appearance" only, I think he would look better if the legs weren't jointed but only with wire inside, without the separation between the body and the leg, like in your other plushes dot-doll.deviantart.com/art/Ke…
I don't know if you understand what I mean though XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dot-DOLL In reply to vonBorowsky [2014-03-06 16:49:41 +0000 UTC]

I agree, actually XD Only once I'd finished him did I think I should have wired him as a whole rather than joint him. The hind legs in particular are a bit plump off his sides. Oh well, I know for the next one.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

vonBorowsky In reply to dot-DOLL [2014-03-06 16:54:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes! Exactly the hind legs that are too big. It doesn't make him looks bad, he continues to be super cute!
You can also use that ball joint armatures if you are affraid of wire breaking

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dot-DOLL In reply to vonBorowsky [2014-03-06 16:57:09 +0000 UTC]

I can never find that ball joint stuff here in the UK, only through expensive US import! Or as pre-assmebled doll bodies.Β I might just have to buy it anyway, I suppose little bits wouldn't add much to the price of each plush... It looks so much better to use. Supposedly it can hold quite a weight too (Rudy has quite a heavy head for a plush)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

vonBorowsky In reply to dot-DOLL [2014-03-06 17:08:07 +0000 UTC]

Oh that is terrible! But well, I also have to import lots of things because I simply cannot find here in Brazil =/
Isn't possible to import from China?Β
I think it holds weight very well, they seems to be very "tight"!
The disadvantage is that they bend up to 90Β° only, but for this kind of plush I imagine it is enough!Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dot-DOLL In reply to vonBorowsky [2014-03-06 17:11:16 +0000 UTC]

With the exception of wings, I don't think I've ever needed to bend more than about 45 degrees, so that would not be a problem! Hmm, I'll have a look for chinese suppliers, since they are usuallyΒ a lot cheaper, it's just waiting the 5 odd weeks for delivery XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

vonBorowsky In reply to dot-DOLL [2014-03-06 17:17:46 +0000 UTC]

Hmm the wings! True, maybe these armatures be too thick for wings.. But you can maybe continue with the armature on those.
I made just a few art dolls, but I like to use a wire that has a plastic cover on it (I think it is a bid harder to break)Β

Yes, this is the problem. But you are lucky if you wait 5 weeks. I am waiting for stuff I bought on October yet!! But the problem is with the brazilian customs =/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dot-DOLL In reply to vonBorowsky [2014-03-06 17:21:34 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow, October? What are they doing in customs there! That's nearly half a year!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

vonBorowsky In reply to dot-DOLL [2014-03-06 17:33:38 +0000 UTC]

They are probably doing nothing and let it in storage for some five months. Someday they send it to me.Β
Customs here are terrible, the import tax is 60%, if they take your package it takes months to arrive, sometimes they open the package and close it very bad package and your stuff arrives broken, and they taxed a soft sculpture that was a trade! It was a gift! GRRR!! This is just the stories I lived, but you can find many others even worst around!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dot-DOLL In reply to vonBorowsky [2014-03-06 17:42:29 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that's terrible! I thought gifts weren't meant to be taxable? I can understand that Brazil is careful, since any unwanted creatures coming in would probably thrive in the warmer climate, but 60% tax is just rediculous. I bet a lot of stuff goes "missing" too *cough stolen cough*

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

vonBorowsky In reply to dot-DOLL [2014-03-06 17:49:38 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they meant, but if you want you can complain but then it will go back to customs and stay there for only god knows how many extra time!
The doll was sent me on November and arrived at February, so, I and the artist split the horrendous tax... but at least they didn't open the box.
Yes, it happens as well..
It is ridiculous, and we also have the highest taxes in the world. If at least it cames back to us, but all this money looks to simply "disapear" u.u

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dot-DOLL In reply to vonBorowsky [2014-03-07 15:07:09 +0000 UTC]

So they tax you for business imports butΒ it doesn't actually go into your economy? Where the hell does it go? The carrier?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

vonBorowsky In reply to dot-DOLL [2014-03-07 19:26:12 +0000 UTC]

It supposedly goes to our economy, but the streets, the healthy, the security, the education, everything sucks. A big part of this money is lost to corruption u.u Oh and I forgot to mention that the 60% tax isn't only over the price of the product but the shipping cost is included on this amount!! =/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dot-DOLL In reply to vonBorowsky [2014-03-10 09:53:03 +0000 UTC]

ehrmahgerd 60% on EVERYTHING?! That is... extreme... I just don't get why, if it is known corruption is happening, nothing is done to stop it. Its like Africa, a lot of the aide money isΒ  lost to corruption and greed, and I don't really understand why we can't seem to get around it...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

vonBorowsky In reply to dot-DOLL [2014-03-12 12:09:03 +0000 UTC]

On imported items only. I don't know how much it is in general, but is high.
Because the political make the laws, they are corrupt and many were put there by the goverment and not by the people. That is why is hard to get them out and stop all it from happening =/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dot-DOLL In reply to vonBorowsky [2014-03-13 11:00:40 +0000 UTC]
