                  ::Watch The BladeRunner Composite Here ::

I'm back again trying to post my Blade Runner composite on DevArt. It was taken down a while back because it infringed a lot of copyrights even though it was an academic produced piece.

So I'm trying again, this time with screen shots of the film, and a link to see the actual movie off site.

::About::
This was my final compositing project last spring semester. We had to find a popular movie and replace an actor with ourselves using the compositing techniques we've learned throughout the year.

This took 5 months of filming, keying, color correcting, and relentless nitpicking from my teacher. I'm very pleased with the result and it so happens this is my first official professional piece.

And as always, the high quality version can be found on my website under "Demo Reels" > "2008 Reel".

Enjoy.

I remember finding this video on Vimeo! I loved your work (I watched several of your videos). I really liked the kinetic type from the Mythbusters. That was brilliant. So, I hope you really become successful in the future - you have some serious skill.

but how do you clean the original plate?

Well, here's the gist of it: Since this is a locked off shot, you can take one frame of the footage, and possibly another frame that has more of the background in it, and using photoshop and its clone and heal tools, paint out the actor in that frame and recreate the background. Export that out and bring it back into your composite. Overlay it, do some tweaking/blending, and there you go. Its locked off, so no need to animate its position so that it covers up the actor the whole time. Nice little trick of matte painting.

interessting... so no need to retouche every single frame..?

Nope. Because its a locked off shot, one doctored frame will cover up all the other frames with the actor in it. Thus creating a clean plate for the whole scene so I can place my green screen element in and color correct it.

I've seen the whole thing now too. (the one with you in it ) And damn its realy good. (although I have to say you have to mutch movement in your face to be a good acktor But I guess that that was not the point of you projeckt hehe)
Did you paint frame for frame to rermove the original acktor out the clip or do you have a faster way to do so?

dotcommer In reply to Temarinde [2008-09-02 16:17:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... I'm no actor for sure. If you look at the end of the movie, those breakdown shots are exactly how I did each scene. Each Swipe of the black line indicates a pass. So while I wasn't painting frame by frame, I was instead keying and color correcting meticulously.

I can imagine to put someone in a film but to get the actor out of it sounds hard to me.
Hej, could you replace yourself with Jack Sparrow? (just joking, but if I had sutge skills I should have tried it )
