Description Sphaeroculum, a small pharyngopod between 5 and 6 cm in length. The compound eyes located at both ends of its body form a globose shape that serves as protection against predators, acting as shields thanks to the hardness provided by the aragonite lenses of its ommatidia. This behavior is similar to that probably had the ancestors of the ophtalmocerids, with which Sphaeroculum is not closely related. Its multiple digestive zooids, which also serve as locomotor appendages, have a mouth specialized in trapping microorganisms. It is a common genus in coastal waters and is associated with caulostomes, with which they maintain commensalism relationship
