This is what we get when gaming companies ''milk'' a series. Resident Evil went downhill right after re4 was made... such a shame really.

Yeah... though I feel like a bastard since on one end I bitch that gameplay is too different, but on another end I bitch that story is too similar.

The main problem is that re4 to re6 it's not really Resident evil anymore, by that I mean it's lost the survival horror basic behind it, 0 to 3 had this hell even 4, but 4 was too action but it kept the characters personality which was good otherwise I would have hated it.
Capcom followed the occidental culture way too much which is often the hero that goes in guns blazing and lots of actions, oh and lots of explosions.

I consider myself lucky to have been born soon enough to know the classics, I'll always remember how the first zombie in Resident evil original scared the hell out of my mind when it turn around with milky white eyes and bloodied mouth.
Or when EA wasn't a compagny that only cared about making a profit.
These are bad times we are in now and the worse has yet to come I believe...

I didn't hate Homecoming either when it came down to it, but it would have been nice if they established more of their own themes/symbolism.

Hahah, the old problem of basing a video game on a movie, based on another video game.
It's a shame because I liked a few of the things it tried on its own merits, like some of the relationship background for Alex and his family, but at times it felt like it was trying to force a connection with previous titles. e.g. Pyramid Head and the crazy cult.

Yeah, Resident Evil is doing the same thing only 1000 times worse! I too liked a lot of elements in Homecoming, like you said Alex's relationship with his family, that whole plot point was really cool, showing how parents basically had to choose a favorite, so to speak. Though I thought it was weird how 2 of the families chose to only have 1 kid.

May by why I think long running series can benefit from the standalone story formula, like RE4.
But if they're going to keep making films at least throw Leon and his one-liners in there so the cheesiness is ironic .
Had mixed feelings about bringing the cult back into things; but I guess I thought the exploration into harsh family life was something new for the series. The flashbacks of an austere father yelling at Alex while favoring his brother? His distant mother masking pain behind indifference? They were interesting emotions to build off of, and I'm not sure if it really needed a straight-up villain like Judge Holloway to move things along.
Could say those other families were waiting until after they lost the first kid, or didn't want to be forced to choose one, ooor it's a plot hole? *shrug*

Not to mention those few parts I felt like I was watching Saw rather than Silent Hill. lol
One of those could have been better, could have been worse deals I suppose.
Can seem that if a sequel's too similar to earlier titles people feel it didn't measure up or hold it's own, but if it takes a whole new direction people will complain it's too different. Tough act to follow.

Hah ain't that hilarious, I thought so too? In a newspaper in the 2nd (the last one I saw thank God) don't they say something like "Jill's partner, Leon S. kennedy was killed..." Well, he's in the newest one! He's in his RE4 style outfit with Ada Wong, Barry and... come to think of it, a whole slew of "dead" character were listed on IMDB. Rain, One, Carlos... so, I dunno. Probably just means it's the worst one yet.

It's a shame that survival/psychological horror is such a niche genre. There's so many things they can do with it, but a lot of this current news boils down to trying to recapture the spark earlier popular titles had.
