Wildcats held the line until the Corsairs and Hellcats showed up. It’s a myth about the Hellcat being designed after we captured a Zero. You’re right, design work began in 1938, but first flight was a few months after Pearl Harbor.

Depends on who writes the list. There are plenty. The Hellcat could indeed maneuver well at low speeds, but, better to use the raw power and speed to defeat the Zero, like the others did against it.
