Description

Acrylic on illustration board, 20” x 24”

“He ran till he came to a small hill, at the top of which stood a cross and at the bottom of which was a tomb. I saw in my dream that when Christian walked up the hill to the cross, his burden came loose from his shoulders and fell off his back, tumbling down the hill until it came to the mouth of the tomb, where it fell in to be seen no more.”

- John Bunyan, The Pilgrim’s Progress

I've never read the book, but I've heard of it, definitely. My mentor loves it! Lovely pictures for a lovely metaphor.

I definitely recommend the book, especially since so many reader-friendly editions have been recently released. If you're interested there's a good selection available at wtsbooks.com which you can find here:

Great work!

Just some random ideas from me about Christian's burden.

It's especially interesting that Christian received the burden when he started reading The Book, that is, The Law.
It was The Law which caused him to have guilt and that's why he feared he would sink to below the grave.
It also explains why no one could take the burden off.

At the cross the burden fell down. Christ forgives and we are as such guiltless.

Yet if he hadn't read The Book he wouldn't have known he was sinful.

I think it was Paul who said that he did not know sin but by the Law.

Anyway, I love your Pilgrim's Progress art!

God bless.

Wonderful rendition of the iconic scene, and very emotive of how I felt when Christ saved me.

I love the texture on the ground.  That was an awesome quote to illustrate.   I've never read Pilgrim's Progress.

DouglasRamsey In reply to Emberblue [2014-04-10 12:35:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much. Texture is often easier to actually create than to draw but I'm not sure if this piece doesn't need some more shadow or dappled light or something. The values are a little darker than they should be (for now) because this was done as a VBS promotional poster. I definitely recommend the book which you can find at pretty much any library, but if you want your own copy Westminster Bookstore www.wtsbooks.com has several great editions.

Emberblue In reply to DouglasRamsey [2014-04-14 16:06:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, now that you mention it I guess that it could use some shadows.  VBS is very fortunate to use your art.

DouglasRamsey In reply to Emberblue [2014-04-28 14:10:38 +0000 UTC]

That's kind of say. Actually any church should be able to purchase copies of these paintings for their VBS once I have them up at fineartamerica.com
