great work, lots of details. and while the texture repetion of texture is not recommended most of the time, in This picture, if fits perfectly.

Yeah, the regularity of the background texture is really rather against the rules for typical art, bu it never even occured to me to break it up. That is something to consider, though.

very impressive. love the detail, not too crowded, but every time you look there's something new.

very well intergrated, as well, most of the stock images i didn't notice were there until i saw the originals.

has a completely different feel to it from the individual images- real manipulation, if you ask me.

well done.

Anebrd [2006-10-14 12:58:34 +0000 UTC]

Amazing. The colors are beautiful. I like how you did the "wings". How did you come up with the title?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DougQ In reply to Anebrd [2006-10-14 18:34:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. The title is rather compliated. I often will start playing with images, and only after I am into it for awhile will the title occur to me. This one was like that. In the past Americans had a slur that they would apply to Native American Indians. They would call them Indian Givers. This slur was based on a difference in culture. Many Native American tribes just did not have the same notion of property as the European Colonists. My understanding is that this difference in how they viewed property resulted in situtions where the Indians would give gifts to the whites and later take them back.

There is religious imagery in thepiece too. The background and and much of the tatooing on the arm comes from a photograph of the Vatican throne room. In fact, you can find the pope on her arm if you look.

Then we have the skull superimposed over her head.

Ultimately the title is an expression of my attitude toward the idea of God. I am referring to God the giver in the same way Europeans referred to the Native Americans. He gives the gift of life only to take it back. While that angers me, I also am admitting that my anger and hostility may only be based on a "cultural" misunderstanding about the nature of property.

The whole thing is just a bit too "clever clever" and self-indulgent, but there it is.

i noted the reference to Blake, are you a fan?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DougQ In reply to lucias-stock [2005-01-29 16:20:46 +0000 UTC]

Thanks,

Blake? Yeah, I guess I would say I am a minor fan. I love the watercolors. I have seen a few of them, although not the best at the Tate in London. A few of his poems are brilliant as well. The one about the tiger, the poem about Nobodaddy, and a couple of the Songs of Innocence.
