Description Taken on a camping trip to Lake of the Woods, Ontario, Canada. On a nice hot sunny day we decided to rent a boat and go out fishing. When returning in the early evening, we came across a pair of loons swimming in a little cove. We cut the motor on the boat and let it drift in towards the birds. To my surprise they didn't seem to mind us being there and for about half an hour we watched while they continued to preen themselves and even call to each other. It was a most awesome experience.

Common Loons are a classic symbol of northern wilderness, and indigenous people in Manitoba once believed that these birds possessed supernatural powers. It was thought that the loon's haunting call was the voice of the Great Spirit, Manitou.

If you have ever heard the haunting call of a loon you will never forget it. I hope you enjoy the picture. It is something I will never forget.

Featured:  The LoonOkay who has never heard a Loon ?
Well I feel exactly like this guy
listen to this
and there are different kinds too
Want to hear what I would hear in my younger days
when we spent a lot of our summer camping
and always by the lake
Its not camping to me if I am not right beside the water
its pointless
this is what I heard daily/nightly
well less the background music
There was often a few coyote packs
running by and howling in the middle of the night
Oh how I miss those sounds
~ ~ ~
Sit back relax close your eyes
pretend you are sitting on a dock
or floating on a kayak as I did and still do
and listen  ~ shhhh ~ listen
Oh while we are here might as well add a few beautiful loon deviations

Loons are cool
Once a baby/teenage loon got separated from its parents and came close to me. When he realised I was there, he spread out his neck and laid flat on the water, pretending to be a log or something. Then his parents came pick him up It was cool to see.

Wonderfull! Unfortunately I haven't seen Loons while being in Canada (exept for on the 'loony' coin, that is). It must have been a great experience to see them from so close by!

Oh that's lovely. When ever we try to get near Loons they all dive under the water, and the zoom on our little camera isn't strong enough to close enough.

They're usually so timid.
Closest I've gotten was when one actually came nearer to shore and was swimming back and forth(and getting farther out with each back and forth sweep).

Nice shot. The first time my wife ever heard a loon's call, she nearly tipped our 12' canoe into a river.. The bird was right beside us hidden in some reeds... loud!

Gorgeous close up. Shows how smooth his head feathers are & the eye really stands out here. He's got his eye on you.
Had never noticed the triangular patch of black & white stripes on the lower neck before.
