Description I hate emo. I hate it in the same way I hate country music, pop music, and couture fashion. Among other things I also hate salt water, sunburn, anime, shorts, getting my hair wet in the rain, and TV shows like Glee and Two and a Half Men. To me, emo is a nothing genre and I just don't get the attraction to it; in much the same way as I don't get why people listen to country music.

So, with that said it strikes me as odd that people just don't understand where I'm coming from. I'm not saying you have to agree, but you do have to realise that this is my opinion.

If you don't share this view then move on to another deviation (here, I'll help. Click this and bugger off --> Random Dev ).

If you don't understand what I mean and believe I'm being discriminatory then you're just plain stupid and I have no time to listen to your filthy comments.

So, before you launch into a rant about how horrid I am etc why don't you open your damn eyes and read the following:

I don't hate people, so stop taking this as an insult. If you think I'm taking a hit at the individuals that call themselves emo you're wrong. So your nasty comments and spiteful remarks will be ungrounded. Do yourself a favour and simply leave this deviation of mine alone if you can't get your head around that.

If you leave a nasty comment all you're gonna get in reply is a flip of the bird. Oh, and while I'm at it I'll just hide your comment so that others don't need to read your crap.

Read the above, try to understand it and if that fails then simply get over it.

3/8/11 - NOTE: Well it looks like people here on DA are too stupid to even read the above. So I've done myself a favour and have turned comments off.

I agree ._. Emo isn't real. It's a phase of teenagers because of their hormones, if someone feels like they really are emo they're probably just depressed and should get some help. Emo comes to a point where it's just all around ridiculous and people do it just to get attention. It ruins life for those people, so there..not all people disagree as of now...

That's called puberty. Emo is a subculture that developed in the late nineties early 21st century as an offshoot of punkrock and has incorporated goth fashion trend. People doing things in order to get attention is more of a human nature trait. Depression is a serious illness, and you do not have to be emo to have it. There is a stigma in society against people with depression, so sadly, not many people go untreated due to both the social stigma and the cost of medication.

But yeah, we'll just pin it on an entire subculture.

I hate emo so much ¬____¬
They give people with REAL problems in their life and REAL mental disorders such a bad reputation.
They're self-centered and fail to realise that EVERYONE goes through shite in their lives.
They make alternative fashion seem repetitive and unoriginal.
They do no good to anyone.. they're too busy whinging the prime of their lives away.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PotterpuppetPal3 In reply to Amethyst-Grave [2011-06-04 03:08:39 +0000 UTC]

That's a stereotype. Usually, most people that dress in emo clothing and are depressed are just generally depressed. Depression rates run similar to all subgroups, whether they be jock, steampunk, anime nerd, or redneck. In reality, most people, if not all people, do have problems, and one person should generally not pass judgment on others generically.
Please tell me, what constitutes as a "REAL" problem? Does wearing black clothing and listening to sad music make someone's problems less real? I am eager to debate this.

Amethyst-Grave In reply to PotterpuppetPal3 [2011-06-05 16:06:53 +0000 UTC]

Well think about it, if you had something genuinely wrong with you, you generally don't go about screaming it to the world looking for someone to pity you. You'd tell your friends and stuff obviously but not everyone you ever knew.
It's not the clothes or the music you listen to that makes the problem less real in the eyes of the world.. it's the amount of people you tell and in what context.
I don't think dresing in black and listening to sad music etc makes anyone's problems less real. I myself dress somewhat like the stereotypical goth/mosher/whatever and listen to some similar music. I have my fair share of problems and I've been through a few fucked up situations etc etc but no way would I ever consider posting on fb or whatever "I WANT TO DIEEE MY LIFE IS BAD PITY ME PITY ME PITY ME" then making excuses NOT to be helped as I've known so many people to do.
The people who do seriously get under my skin. They're not doing the whole stereotype thing any favours at all and it's because of them and their mostly constant OOT whinging about nothing that brought the whole stereotype to life in the first place.

Dreaming-in-Shadow [2011-05-14 12:05:03 +0000 UTC]

I don't mind if people dress like that.
But I can't stand all the little kids running around going "OMG my life is so horrible! I cut myself it's so bad! (fyi kid, I can tell that's red biro ink on your wrists) You just hate on me because you don't understand my pain! I'm gonna kill myself I'm so depressed!"

That was near enough an actual quote from a "friend" of mine.
I could seriously strangle most of these idiots (except most will grow out of it, and many I know don't claim to be depressed, they just like the clothes).
A few might actually develop depression if they keep it up.

Try suffering from real depression and suicidal-thoughts, kiddies, see how the "emo-subculture" feels then.
...that actually pulled a rant out of me.

Anyway. I like the stamp, and fully agree on Glee (take it off the TV, please.) and country music.

Love the stamp. Hate the emos. I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but I don't care. I am well aware that emo is supposed to mean "emotional", not "depressed". That, in my opinion, is the problem. What emos think is "emotional", I think of as annoying. I don't care how much they hate their life, the color pink, rules, manners...etc. I hate complainy people in general. Suck it up, eat some chocolate, and move on.

I am very irritated about the whole hype around it too. I mean, sure, people are allowed to express themselves, I must admit I like wearing black a lot too (but that's mainly because I am shy and feel self-conscious in bright colours- I like to blend in ). But it gets to a point where it starts getting in other people's way. For example, when they constantly moan about how awful their life is, and how their boyfriend/girlfriend left them. I personally believe it is all just for attention. I mean, I know being a teen is tough. I am one myself- but it's not THAT bad. Everyone has good days and bad days. Mood swings. Arguments with parents. Feeling lonely. Friend troubles etc etc etc. I suppose I can tolerate it though- I'm a lover not a hater.
But what does really make me angry is when they fake mental illness. Saying that they're depressed/bi-polar so they get even more sympathy and attention from others. It's just disgusting. Sick. Insensitive. People have LOST THEIR LIVES to these disorders.

Emo means depressed. its just one more thing society has taken and screwed up to make it look like people who purposely do it for attention. i hate the idea too. i hate that people act emo so they can get attention. i dont understand what kind of attention would be that great that they would mock a real serious sickness such as depression just to get their precious attention. but i do agree with you and think that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Emo doesn't mean depressed... It's short for 'emotional', which means sensitive, quite, and thoughtful, and strong with feeling, of happiness or sadness, it doesn't matter. And you're probably a wanna-be emo if u try and get attention for being "depressed", or cutting yourself (not talking about anyone in particular o.e). emo is also a music genre, so I don't know where the hell you got it meaning depression...

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Vakki In reply to Vakki [2011-04-22 22:03:45 +0000 UTC]

Oh dear, im not assuming you do that. You greatly misunderstood me. I was generally saying that emo wasn't cutting yourself or being depressed. And what i meant by "wanna be" was when people where cutting themselves or shouting out to everyone that they're depressed, making emo look bad. And I wan't saying anyone in particular was a wanna be, or had depression or cut themselves. Certainly not you, or anyone else who was actually like me, who's emo, and doesn't cut themselves, or have depression. And I'm not saying I know you either, directing also to the point you clearly misunderstood me..

yup i actually DO have a slight depression problem believe it or not. im not open about it. and i certainly dont cut myself because of it. its just stereotypical of people to think that what you look like or act like means you must be something. its like saying youre blond so youre obviously going to be an idiot. and its obviously not true! i know quite a few blonde people that are very bright and smart. its the same for some of my other friends. they dress in all black and yet theyre so nice and hilarious. you cant just judge a person until you truly know them.

ive never cut myself. im not even a 'wanna be'. i hate those people. the whole stupid and ignorant 'emo' thing has gotten out of hand. its seriously childish and annoying now. there are many types of depression. any one of them can have a symptom somewhere of being overly emotional, sensitive, or quiet. so how dare you assume i cut myself or am a 'wannabe'. you dont. even. know me.

Pandas-Rock [2011-01-21 02:16:04 +0000 UTC]

One of my friends IRL was cutting, she had severe depression/other psychological issues, and many people, even some of her other friends, were calling her emo. Self-harm and suicide should not be related to "emo", they are actually symptoms caused by disorders and diseases that go on with someone's mind. What I hate is that people put the "emo" tag on anything that involves depression, anxiety, etc.

I have been called emo too. It;'s ridiculous. I have honey coloured hair (not black) I do not listen to emo music (I prefer classic rick such as Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin) I am not depressed (I just get mood swings like any other teen).
The reason I am called emo a lot is because I am a deep thinker and I am a naturally philosophical person. I ponder the universe, I wonder about life after death, etc. This does not make me emo. Unfortunately, some people seem to think that this IS emo. *sigh*
