It was the calm before the storm, the pleasantly warm morning before the suffocating sun took its place high in the sky on a heavy throne of anguished clouds. Asher and Fevernova were waiting less than patiently in the centre of the arena for their judgement lap at halter. The atmosphere would become rich with energy, and the air thickened. The heavy grey suede purses of clouds held lightning and torrential rain, ready to drop like coins on the poor parched earth below. The promise of a quenching downpour might have been welcome to some; not least Asher who felt awfully stuffy in a blazer. He had been out of his fashion comfort zone this entire event, dressing himself in a pastel polo on several occasions by now. Such outfits, though not to his usual taste, had at least kept him cool.
The class notes for halter entries had suggested that breed-appropriate or cultural attire was permissible. “That could be fun”, Ash had remarked at the suggestion, always being one to dress up himself and his horse. Nova, his equine companion was not quite a purebred obertaurer, but represented his majority breed in brains and bravery enough that he could wear the Austrian flag well, of that he was quite sure. Ash himself opted to present a little more lowkey, only acting to compliment his steed since he was not being judged on his own conformation, and didn’t need to fight his stud for the spotlight. With that thought, he scoffed, quite glad of the fact. What would a judge think of his lanky form, deep-set eyes and premature greying? With all his health issues to boot, he’d be pleased with a participation ribbon for pity.
Hopes were a lot higher for his stallion though. The spirited animal was in peak condition, groomed and styled to perfection and was already eager to show off. All had begun rather well; though Ash needed to hush him a few times as he stood with him, Nova stood surprisingly well near other stallions, which certainly weren’t his favourite type of company on most days. Maybe Ash should have read the weather a little earlier and prepared a little better though. Hours before the storm gathered visibly, Fevernova sensed it. All sense of calm and collectedness slowly perspired as the humidity rose. A dozen circles in the sand couldn’t relax the stud who snorted and scoffed, scuffing up the dampened dust.
A stallion standing near came just a little too close and golden-brown ears sharply pinned. Fevernova wasn’t known to be a biter or a kicker, but Ash was not about to risk it either way. Under his breath, the Australian muttered negotiations to his pig-headed horse. It took a tense while, but eventually, the stallion was soothed, and their lap of the arena was up. More than ever, Ash felt relief that the judges probably weren’t looking at him, mumbling like a madman choice words of diplomacy to his chaotic colt.
