Lilac-laced tropical trees passed by in a pastel blur as Asher and Fevernova ran the cross-country course. The feverish sun cast a heated mist over the pond, glistening like the dewy sweat of the tall man’s skin. Both horse and rider glowed under the heat, apparently unphased by the weather and their work, taking well-paced strides through the bush and over the decorated obstacles on their path. Familiar flora and fauna lined and crossed the trail, at every twist and turn. The cacophonous birdsong crescendoed in praise of the pair’s determination and effort, calling to the beat of thundering hooves.

Even the chortling laugh of the kookaburra seemed less mocking than Ash had recalled.

And indeed, the Australian appreciated some sounds of encouragement, be they from bird beaks or otherwise. Cross-country was not Ash’s strongest suit. It took a toll on the strength and stamina from within his body, which had aged much faster than his exterior showed. Still, there was no backing out halfway through the event, particularly because his athletic stallion powered through the terrain on autopilot like an Audi on the Autobahn. Nova was headstrong and confident, far from stupid, and for better or worst, Ash had come to trust him. Not a lot, but at least a little. This horse would never be Desna, he could never come close. Nonetheless, this trip home to South Australia had proven that maybe he didn’t have to be. The young horse was talented, willing and learned exceedingly quickly. In potential alone, he outperformed Ash’s right-hand mare, as was painfully obvious by how he had partaken in so many classes at the Jacaranda Jamboree with enough steam left in him to remain a sassy stallion as ever. It took a while, but the sportshorse’s owner had to reconcile his horse’s differences to avoid comparative disappointment.

‘Horses for courses’, or something like that.

Fevernova was clearly the horse for this course; his pace and panting stood testament to his enthusiasm. Odd eyes were fixed fast on the narrow path forwards, but tawny ears flicked outwards like satellites. So aware of his surroundings was the stallion, that a startled creature stumbling into his way was avoided with a sharp hop sideways. With a sharp spike of shock shared by all three parties, crisis was averted and what seemed to be a large feral goat was spared a high-speed demise. As the reckless pedestrian bolted back into the brush, Ash smiled and for a moment considered that despite his reservations about this horse, maybe he had his back, just a little, after all.
