Familiar faces in the audience quietly supported from where they sat upon chilly metal bleachers under the calm, cosy patter of light rain on the skylight above. The soft beat of rain accompanied the quieted background music, almost distorting it against the wind. It gave the performance what could have felt like an eerie atmosphere, particularly to anyone close enough to see how the rider looked.
Despite an iron-clad armour of confidence built from decades of dressage experience, Jim didn’t look all too well, physically. Anyone who had seen him over the years would recognise his health’s decline, as rapid as it had been. Illness was apparent from his pale skin, ashy and sickly over weak blue veins. Dark circles framed his stark blue eyes like smeared layers of soot, far worse than a lack of sleep could be blamed for. Luckily for the vain man though, thoughts of home, his horse and how this test was turning out would warm his cheeks a touch, and paint a shy smile on his petal lips, at least enough to make him look a little more lively.
The spectators of this year’s Expo probably weren’t there to see some dying man test his own sorely stubborn limits though. Instead, it was the beast of a horse who demanded attention, just like he did in every arena. Like a seasoned dancer, he floated onto a soft-sanded ballroom, halting politely to greet the judges perfectly square.
At Grand Prix level, this solid Irish Draught often stuck out like a sore thumb. He was thick set with a puppy-like appearance, and in show cob style, he lacked a mane. It was always a classic look for a farmhorse or a hunter, but naturally, that made people question what he was doing among all the refined sporthorses and warmbloods he competed against. The extra mass of this studly fellow’s frame didn’t seem to hinder him at all at competitions though; he could still lift his limbs and skim across sand as well as any other horse at his level, and his show record proved as much. To say Jim was proud of his horse was a massive understatement, and he was just as fond of him too. The softest hands guided his horse through the movements, trust and understanding flowing freely through the reins.
The pirouette was the grey pair’s signature, a tidy mark they would leave on the sand. A handsome draft, heavy though he was, seemed almost weightless as he lifted his forelegs, effortlessly puppeteered by an unassuming gentleman collecting his every move. Upon each graceful descent, a gentle groan of effort huffed from the large horse, a testament to his obvious concentration.
