Considering that the professional medical stance is that gender is a MENTAL* thing - it's understandable that this guy has trouble thinking of her as female enough to consider a candidate for a sexual or emotionally intimate relationship - in our world anyway.
*but that takes no account of the capabilities of magic suits (maybe they change mental gender?), or what cultural implications the existence of such suits would have on a culture (and in particular it's influence on the question of physical vs mental gender and whether or not it truly matters in a relationship).
