It terms of the piece itself, the contrariness for me seems to be various layers of contrast--image-wise, the dark and light...the white of the petals with the shadowy background, the focus of the flower and the lack of focus behind--which could be said about its emotion as well. The flower looks depressed, but yet is in bloom. (Might be the "hope in the dark" thing I see other people mention.) But for distraction, one flower seems like it's looking or moving in another direction from the others, "hanging its head" almost...but also "looking" at something below. The whole flower itself seems like a distraction from everything else around...hence the lack of focus while we only get the impression of light and shape from the background.

And I agree with your observations, the intention was to create
a contradictory atmosphere - a neat flower in bloom, yet sad
somehow and alone.
