From the journals of Doctor El'Jek, " The parasite starts off with simplistic, primal motivation to divide... over time though, it gains intelligence and an understanding that there is more to its world than it perceives. It starts altering the host's genetic data to form senses, limbs etc. to interact with the world (it hates blindness so forming eyes is usually the initial step). The crystals, my team believes, is a way for it to communicate with its own parts (and perhaps external siblings?) which is observed by the pulsing of the light in the crystals. From our test, we have determined that the crystal formation is not a painful process. As it grows, it slowly kills the layers of cells around it giving them a rocky texture, devoid of sensory cells (from the host that is). It avoids going for the brain and completely taking over the host's system until the very latter stages, probably because it believes that doing so would kill the host (the only thing sustaining the parasite)".
