More Photoshop-pencil-sketch practice
Anywho, was tooling around DeviantArt looking at Pokémon art, saw people diss Pelipper and its “derpy” design, and decided to do some positive art relating to Pelipper and showcasing it in a semi-realistic fashion (because those are fun! ).
I suppose people’s main beef is Pelipper’s very stiff design, which is actually quite common with Pokémon across all official fields—even the new 3D games have Pelipper (and quite a few other Pokémon) as being very inflexible. But this is easy to fix—just do what all art colleges teach you: understand the basic skeleton. Pelipper is based on a pelican—so I drew the basic pelican pose, and then fleshed it out further. You’ll notice a lot of lines on the stomach—that was me filling Pelipper out so it matched the official design. Next was focusing on the neck folds—pelicans rest their beaks on their chest when they’re perching for the most part, so Pelipper should be able to do the same thing. This requires the assumption that their throat pouch isn’t some hard drum. And the wings were treated like real wings instead of some odd arm-looking things. And giving them actual thighs and legs instead of just tacking the feet on the bottom. I like the final result, personally, and I think I’ll be drawing Pelipper like this again soon.
Is that it? That’s it. Man, I miss classic Hoenn—ORAS isn’t nearly as fun.
