This makes me think of Greg Bear's "Eon" and "Eternity", part of which is set in a tube-shaped universe which has a beginning (attached to a human space station) but no end. The further you travel down it, the stranger it gets. I suspect that this is a part of "the Way" that has been colonised by non-humans.
