My final for my now very-missed illustration class...

This final assignment was to illustrate a scene from one of three radio stories played during class. One was "The House on Cypress Canyon" by William Spier (and sponsored by ROMA Wine!), about a couple renting a house which is possessed by a werewolf curse (that also induces SUSPENSE! [Download and hear the story here .]); the other was "A Sound of Thunder", about a team of time-traveling safari-goers who decide to hunt dinosaurs of the past and ultimately alter the future (Hear the story here .); the last was "The Veldt" also by Ray Bradbury, about futuristic sibling children of negligent parents who decide to take revenge by activating the high-tech playroom against their parents (Sorry, I couldn't find any sound samples for this one). Of course you know what I chose, heheh.

I actually was conflicting between two ideas when drawing out a scene for this story: A scene where the whole group is looking through the windows of the time machine and illustrating a variety of facial expressions; and an action scene that is more cover-worthy. My illustration teacher said they were both very strong pieces, so I could chose either one. My lil' brother persuaded me to choose the latter, since the first one looked too "boring". Thus, you guys get this.

All you need to know: "A Sound of Thunder", great short story by Ray Bradbury, horrible movie adaptation--according to my illustration teacher, who worked on some of the pre-production for the movie.

I adjusted the curves in Photoshop because the picture looked pale on screen. Hopefully the contrast isn't too harsh...

My main concentrations were in the colors and composition of the piece.

Run, Eckels, Run!

Drawn with mechanical pencil, colored with Crayola colored pencils on bristol board.

Wow! I don't know why I've never come across this before. This is absolutely amazing! (And it's traditional media too! Oooo...*_* ) Wow, you absolutely rock at coloured pencils. And they're Crayola's too! I'd love to see what you can do with Prisma's.

You mentioned Ray Bradbury. I just realized now this is from a Ray Bradbury story. You seriously have done justice to his story. I can honestly say that I can see this as an accompanying illustration to this story! This...is...a...must fav.

This is pro work, my friend!

Thank you very much--and sorry for the extremely late replies, heheh. Crayola's all the way, heheh.

Hopefully when I get back into traditional media, I'll definitely try out some Prisma's.

I only wish these were markers, heheh. Try Crayola colored pencils; they're cheap but efficient!

Part of the assignment dealt with researching so is to include accurate renderings within the environment of the illustration. I researched the flora and fauna of the Jurassic era, where the story partially takes place in, so the plants were inevitable, heheh. Though I do wish I pushed the details of the plants a little more to make them more accurate to the real plants of that time; as well as show some more scales on the dinosaurs.

It looks like an awesome cover art for an old sci-fi novel. Your drawing skills are truly impressive, as is your coloring, and the application of highlights/shading is expertly applied. And the overall composition is very balanced and intelligently presented. Great job! ^^

Thank you very much (^-^)!

For the composition, I tried to keep it in a general triangular shape, but it appears there are multiple triangles that can be found, looping around the overall piece. Hopefully, I will make more pieces in colored pencil.

Aw, you will be able to. Just keep practicing and experimenting. You'll find what you like and use it to your advantage. That's what I did, heheh.

I just finished a small pic in grey, and I'm busy finishing a really old one... after that I want to practise with coloured pencil XD I already printed out a few line-arts It's like I'm three all over again...

Is it ok if I ask you for advice when I start practising with coloured pencil?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DRa90NBoi In reply to Nelleke [2007-07-14 16:53:35 +0000 UTC]

Heheh, tru. Reminds me of when I used to color pages when I was little.

Sure, ask away. My first tip would be to color as if you were shading the picture using a pencil--varying between very hard and very soft pressure. Once you get the hang of it, you can get a good fading effect as well as layering different colors on top of each other without worrying about the colors overpowering each other. Hope this helps and anything else you would like to ask, feel free.

Hey this is cool :0 I'm really liking how you colored this, especially the sky and the dinosaur. It does look like a poster or advertisement for a movie.

It does look like a poster, doesn't it? Which is what my brother suggested, and is ultimately why I chose this over my first option, heheh.
