For two weeks straight, Izuku could talk about nothing else but the fight against Hikaru and how he had seen the powerful All Might smash that got him captured. He told his friends one afternoon on the playground about how he got so close he could see the heroes’ faces before someone came and saved him from getting crushed by a car. One of them asked if it was any of the heroes that saved him, and he answered truthfully.

"No, it was just a guy."

"You’re so lame that not even a hero bothered to save you?"

Izuku pouted. Katsuki always had something mean to say.

"The heroes were busy!" he said. "That villain was super strong and really fast. Hightail and Automata were lucky they could even touch him!"

"So you just walked into it and let yourself get in danger?" Katsuki teased. "Even though you know you’re quirkless?"

"Why do you have to be so mean all the time, Kacchan?"

Katsuki held out his hand and his palm ignited with a crackling pop. Izuku jumped back.

“Because you’re so weak,” the spike-haired boy gloated. “You should know better than to get into a hero fight without a quirk. The next time you see villains, you’d be better off running with your tail between your legs instead of giving heroes more chores to do.” Katsuki’s hands sparked twice. “Let’s practice.”

Katsuki chased Izuku around the park until two other kids intercepted and pretended that they were heroes stopping a villain from terrorizing a civilian. The young boy watched them fumble around with their quirks. Katsuki singed someone’s arm and his mother reprimanded him from across the playground. Izuku looked down at his own hands and frowned. Katsuki had a point. A quirkless civilian would only get in a hero’s way.

Past the playground, he could see someone sitting at a bench that faced out into the street. The raggedy blond hair looked familiar and was impossible for him to miss. He fortified himself, sucking in his courage to walk over there and see if it really was him.

The slender figure was quietly eating from a bag of snacks. Izuku went up, stood on the bench just behind him, and tapped the man’s shoulder. The man twisted around and propped one arm up on the back of the paired benches. Izuku was speechless. He couldn’t remember if this was the man’s face. He wasn’t sure if he had actually seen his face before. He wasn’t sure if this was the same person.

“Can I help you, kid?” the man asked.

The boy lit up. He recognized the voice, at least. He bent forward, almost banging his forehead onto the wood.

“I wanted to thank you for saving me, sir,” he said. “I would’ve gotten really hurt if it wasn’t for you.”

The man was quiet. Izuku peeked up at him.

“Oh, right!” His resting frown curved into a gentle smile. “I remember you now. Sorry, kid, I forgot who you were for a second there.”

Most of you already know I already don't like doing backgrounds, now I have to re-learn how to do them in a totally different medium.

Another piece for this AU because I'm still frickin' obsessed. I'm doing it; I'm turning it from a short story into a full story. Apologies in advance for the people who will be reading this for the next six years because I'm terrible at scheduling myself.
