- Story - WARNING LONG

Cat waited anxiously infront of the birthing stall. Dutchess was once again having twins.
"It's just not normal! How can one mare have 3 sets of twins!?" Cat asked Dr. Thomas.
"I really can't tell you. It's so rare to have one set but 3 It's a sensation!" He explained more excited then anything.
Before Dutchess he had never been by the birth of twins and now its the 3rd set. It was a dream for an equine vet.
"I hope everything goes well."
Cat was worried. She knew that having twins was rare but having two healthy twins is even rarer. She was nervous.
It was a good half an hour after her water breaking. Dutchess was sweating and steam lifted from her wet fur. She looked miserable and weak.
"I can't wait any longer. I need to get those foals out if we want them to be alive" Dr.Thomas explained to Cat who had tears in her eyes.
"Do what it takes Dr. Just make sure my mare survives!" She said through her sobs.
Dean had come into the mare stable to be there for Cat and took her in his arms.
Dr. Thomas slowly entered the stall and Dutchess slowly lifted her head. Her eyes were empty.
The Dr. went straight to work, he called in Dean to help him as he knew Cat was too upset to concentrate now.
He put on his gloves and gently stroked the mare who started to shiver from exhaustion. He slowly slide his hand into Dutchess and found the first foal quickly.
"It's shoulder is stuck. I need to pull it out or we'll loose both" He ajusted the foals body so that it could fit through the birthing canal. After that it went fast, Dutchess gave a push and the first foal came sliding into the straw.
"Quick dry it with the straw. We need to try to get it to its feet as quick as possible." Dr. Thomas explained to Dean who quickly started rubbing the first foal. It started to take its first breaths and lifted its tiny head looking at Dean with a very confused look in its eyes.
Cat had calmed down and quietly entered the stall. She walked over to Dutchess whos head was resting in the straw. Her eyes were closed. Cat took her head into her arms and started to run her head. The mare looked up at Cat with a helpless look. " I know my beautiful. It'll be over soon" She whispered into the mares ear.
"Cat i need your help now, come quickly i need you to pull on the second foals legs."
She gently let the mares head back into the straw and moved over to her back side. The foals legs were already out. Cat grabbed the tiny legs and slowly started pulling while Dr. Thomas moved it around to help it out.
"This foal is bigger, it's having a harder time getting out" He said almost talking to himself.
It took a good 2-3 minutes before the second foal had finally made it out.
It wasn't breathing.
"We need to get it breathing!"
They knew what to do and vigorously started rubbing the foal with straw. They thought they had lost it as it suddenly gasped for air.
"We need to get Dutchess up so the foals can suckle." Dr. Thomas told the two after they had completely dried the foals and both were breathing and alert.
Dutchess on the other hand was tired and weak. Cat had put a cooler rug on Dutchess so that she wouldnt get cold. She was soaked with sweat.
"Right girl you have to get up now" Cat softly spoke to Dutchess who looked at her sleepy.
"We are going to have to pull her up, shes too weak to get up on her own." Dean said to the others.
Cat put a halter on her mare and the men went to the mares side.
"1...2...3......" Cat counted.
She pulled on the mares halter to get her head up and the men pushed from behind.
It took a few tries but Dutchess eventually made it to her feet.
Dr Thomas looked her over and put her on a drip to keep her hydrated and give her an extra energy boost.
Then he turned his attention to the two little beings who were struggeling to their feet. He looked at the smaller of the two first. "Well this ones a colt. His conformation looks good. He has no deformities and his eyes are clear... and as blue as mamas." He helped the foal up and moved it towards Dutchess. He found the milk quickly and started suckeling eagerly.
In the mean time his sibling had made it to its feet and was wobbeling towards the mare.
"Wait a minute little one." He smiled grabbing the foal and having a look over. "Looks like you got a brother" He looked into the foals ears and eyes, checked its mouth and gums. "He also looks healthy." The Doc was basically making mental notes and not actually speaking to anyone.
He had pumped milk from Dutchess and bottle fed the second foal. Making sure the bottle was close to Dutchess teets so the foal knew where to find milk the next time.
Dutchess started lifting her head and looked at her two knew babies intrested.
"It looks like Dutchess is doing better now too." Dean smiled at Cat who looked releaved.
"I'll be staying here for the night" Cat said leaving the stall to get a sleeping bag.
"If they make the night the should be fine, i'll come back tomorrow morning to check on them. Make sure to call me immediatly if there are any problems during the night." Dr. Thomas told Cat as she stood in the door with her sleeping bag in hand. "Of course. Thank you Doc" She smiled at the vet who grabbed his bag and started towards his truck.
"Should i stay with you?" Dean asked cat who was petting Dutchess and inspecting her new foals.
"Sure , I'd like that" She smiled and yawned.
" I'll go grab my sleeping bag and we can take turns watching over the three" He left to get his things.
Cat walked over to the two colts who were now laying next to their mother, she was quietly munching on some grain.
"Youve done it again Dutchess. You've created two beautiful little horses." She smiled at the two sleeping foals.
Dean came back and they got their things ready for the night in a corner of the stall. Dean took the first watch and Cat fell asleep next to him. She was exsausted.
The night went without any issues. The foals suckled every few hours and Dutchess seemed to accept both foals. She was also back to strength,but still a little weak so the Doc gave her another drip and told Cat to keep a close eye on them. If they survive the first week they should grow to be healthy little stallions.

So yea thats what happend when Dutchess gave birth to twins .... again!
