Description *dies*
I honestly have no idea where to begin with this piece, there is soooo much I want to say about it – ie the process I went through and so on… but I don’t want to detract from the piece itself… So feel free to skip the rambling if I start.

Anyway! For the Temeraire contest being held by the series Author Naomi Novik. – I will admit I nearly died when I heard about the contest – and nearly again when I heard it was international too (here's hoping that wasn’t a bluff).

The scene is… well I’m not too sure; its Temeraire himself and one of the ships of the line British or French (as my BF pointed out when I was about half way though). I always had a mental idea that Temeraire would be protecting it for the simple fact that seems to be more in his nature, but in the end I guess it’s more up to the viewer. Or up to Naomi Novik herself if this should get chosen as one of the fifteen *fingers crossed* ^^: I might be hoping for too much though I have seen some of the other contest pieces out there and they put me to shame

Here’s to hoping though!

Btw; see the WIP here: [link]

Ok, now for the artist babble that is me…

Before this piece, I have never done something digitally, well not fully anyway. The other so called digital pieces in my gallery were all inked by hand and coloured in with the paint bucket and the occasional sweep if the burn and dodge tools kind of embarrassing… this piece on the other hand was done COMPLETELY within photoshop… and I mean completely… I even started with my rough sketch in there – The only thing I didn’t do in there were my thumbnail sketches when I was working out ideas.

Then from rough sketch I refined… I even red-lined my own work when mapping out the muscles and so on… Seriously his chest and those wings took about three, maybe four goes before I was happy with either of them.

The ship… I had originally wanted it to be the Temeraire itself… You know the one… the 98 gun ship of the line, second class. Also one of the only three ships in the Neptune Class, The Neptune and the most famous of the British Dreadnaught’s being the other (yes the British navy has had more than one ship called Dreadnaught). Biggest problem here was finding references as most of the ships of the line no longer exist – in fact the only one still around is Nelson’s 100 gun flag ship; the HMS Victory.

The Victory actually ended up being my main reference for this image… I MAJORLY referenced photos and models I found of her all around the net… unfortunately I can’t find the images any more – but MANY MANY THANKS to anyone who has ever uploaded pictures of the Victory!

It took me a day to colour and shade Temeraire; a day for the ship, and a day for the waves and sky This is after I had spent weeks trying to finish the line work… yeah… I have no time atm due to Uni work… I ended up blowing off half of last week’s classes to finish this *headdesk* student FAIL! Even then the bulk of the work was done on my day off (Friday) and over the weekend – kinda glad I have study break this week in order to catch up on everything else.

I had a lot of fun with this… even though I didn’t know what I was doing half the time – I was just playing around with grey scale (due to the fact that if it wins it will only be printed in black and white) and the various levels of opacity and flow of the brush… I will admit my fave levels are 40 and 50…

I think this piece officially broke my tablet in

Also, my BF saw this piece at various stages of its construction and asked at the end when was I going to draw something for him o.0 He’s not an arty person and he wants something *not sure what to think about that* I told him I have a MAJOR back log; and he said he could and would wait… so much to do.

Anyway… enough rambling

NEXT PIECE : TAROT CARD FOR VISIONARY ASSASSINS

CRITS ARE WELCOME – PLEASE; I may have invested a lot in this piece, but good feedback is never knocked away!

Actually, the British never had a ship called the "Dreadnaught". Dreadnought, on the other hand...

Nice work with the picture, very shadowy. You get a free cow.

Why hello; thanks for the really uplifting comment.
In all honesty when drawing this pic I didn't have access to the novels to double or even triple check the size ratios of dragon to ship. I will also admit to spending less time on this then I should have... but you know, School comes first. Heavens forbid. Please note that said pic was drawn two years ago, I'd like to think I have improved since then; but thanks so much for your honesty.

its not all that big o a problem i guess but still a three deck is going to have somewhere like 100 or 80 guns on it and be over 100 feet long amaybe over 200

Given that I used the HMS Victory as a ref the one in the pic was prolly a 100 gun ship (although the Temeraire which I could find images for was a 98 gun ship) I did a little digging around for information. I kind of just rushed into this piece would really planing were pieces ended up. I guess it could be an interesting exercise to sit down and redo it one of these days. Would have to find my copies of the novels again to get some sizing done

What particular topic is your essay on?

I don't like essays, well, erm, actually, I do, as long as it is something I want to write about

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dracona-fin In reply to Deliquesce-Flux [2010-10-24 07:41:04 +0000 UTC]

The essay is a social exchange we have observed... So mine is going to be along the lines of "how online avatars have created hyper real freedom as the break down the socail conventions placed in gender"

is a mouthful

I hate essay's too... sometimes they are ok... if the subject is INTERESTING

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Deliquesce-Flux In reply to dracona-fin [2010-11-01 23:05:17 +0000 UTC]

It is a mouthful, but it's interesting What conclusion have you reached?

dracona-fin In reply to Deliquesce-Flux [2010-11-04 01:29:59 +0000 UTC]

that the so called reality online is more significatly escapism Because people can be whoever and whatever they want

Deliquesce-Flux In reply to dracona-fin [2010-11-04 03:46:36 +0000 UTC]

That is very true, definitely. Sometimes, it's rather ironic to see how much some people are like their online personas, and how much some people are not like their online personas
