Description I finally decided to use the 'Das' modeling clay I got last year.

I didn't want to make an ordinary dragon so I decided to make a lovedragon instead. For those who don't know what I'm talking about go here [link]
I still have to make a 'face plate' for her too.

Started out with some modeling wire and foil then molded the clay around it.
I hadn't used clay basically since high school so I really enjoyed myself.
Saying that - it was a race against time making her due to the drying clay but yeah.
I plan on painting her up quite soon, haven't decided on colours yet. Ideas?
When I paint her I'll put this into scraps.

Looks cool. Have you fired the sculpture? It would look nice with paint on.

oh..ok. coz i was gonna talk about earthenware and stoneware glazes and coloured clays, and how they have to be the same type to match up with the clay and other complicated ceramics things. You should never put a paint (acrylic, oil, watercolour, whatever) and then a glaze and then fire the thing. But if you dont inend to fire it, and youre a hobby ceramicist, go ahead.

- See ya

Thank you! I haven't ever glazed a ceramic, but it's good to know that I can get advice form you if I ever do.

Nice stuff Jen. I've used some sculpey in the past, and I have a foil skeleton of a dragon sittin on my desk whose been waiting for me to beef it for a while. It looks like the wire you use helps too. What kind may I ask is it?

Thanks! If I remember correctly its aluminum wire. I got it from zollo art in Salisbury. Its really awesome, cheap and very easy to bend with fingers.

So what is the process of using the clay itself? Does it dry at room temperature after x hours? Did you use any tools for shaping? Looking good Jenos. Do you need to prep anything prior to painting?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Draconic-Goth In reply to evil-santa [2007-05-28 08:47:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, it comes in a block...and i just kinda wrapped it around the frame I made. It does dry at room temp which has its good and bad points....I had to work quickly and I sprayed it with water to keep it from drying out when I didn't want it too. The whole scuplt was totally dry the next day.
I did most of the work with my hands but I did use some average wooden clay modeling tools to help out with the fiddly bits. I don't think I need to prep for painting...I think I can paint straight on it. You should have a go with it, its hardly messy either...but it has a strange smell....
