The Nag Hammadi texts are a collection of early Christian texts discovered in Egypt in 1945. They include the Gospel of Mary and the Gospel of Philip, which suggest an intimate relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene- The precise nature of their relationship has been a mystery that has preoccupied scholars for centuries

Pope Gregory conflated Mary Magdalene with the unnamed sinful woman in Luke and the unnamed adulteress in John, diminishing her for centuries, however, in 1969, the Vatican quietly disavowed Gregory's composite Magdalene. Efforts by scholars to reclaim the voices in these lost gospels have given fits to traditional scholars and believers.

Some secret societies propose that after the resurrection of Jesus, he married Magdalene and lived in Europe.

The Woman Jesus Loved: Mary Magdalene in the Nag Hammadi Library contain several references to Mary Magdalene, including the Gospel of Mary Magdalene; the Gospel of Philip describes Mary Magdalene as a "companion" of Jesus "whom the Savior loved more than all the other disciples and [whom] he kissed often on the mouth".

The Gospel of Mary Magdalene is constructed entirely in dialogue, and the exchanges are so lively that they lend themselves easily to a staged reading or even a full-fledged stage reenactment.
