Description Recently, I've been a little obsessed with the play/musical/movie/book "Les Miserables".

I drew this because one night I was listening to the song from Les Miserables "Do You Hear the People Sing?", and it was so powerful that I ended up in tears. And I decided to draw this. It's Marius, I think.

-----LYRICS------

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Courfeyrac:
Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

Will you give all you can give
So that our banner may advance
Some will fall and some will live
Will you stand up and take your chance?
The blood of the martyrs
Will water the meadows of France!

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

when I was in Les Mis I kept on wanting to sing the lyrics to the people's song during the epilogue...well, I eventually got it :3

Yes, yes I was. I wasn't anyone special though. I was just in the chorus.

Still! That would be so cool...
I was a costuming intern at a local theatre this past spring, and I still have this lingering hope that they'll do Les Mis sometime, and I'll get to help out...*sigh* I have this thing for old clothing styles~

Dunno. I haven't actually read it yet - just heard the awesome music, and will be going to the musical in...march, I think? The story is incredible, though! I mean, talk about complicated relationships.

The story is about the French Revolution...the character I drew, Marius, lost all of his friends in the huge riots that occured. The Revolution itself caused the deaths of many.

I know, I read all of Les Miserables, and know the musical better than most of the performers. But by Do You Hear The People Sing, everyone's still alive.

Ah well...I guess I was just drawing the overall feeling that I took out of the song. It has a complicated mixture of emotion, as does the rest of the musical, and I wanted to try displaying that. I wasn't really thinking about the order of the plot itself. Thank you for letting me know!

If I was drawing this picture, which I would never do, because I'm pretty sure my cat draws better than I do, anyway. If I were drawing it, I would use Empty Chairs At Empty Tables instead.

Actually, that's a pretty awesome idea. Once I get a picture of Xavier done (my mom insists that I draw him), I might try that out.

Okay! Thank you. I'll probably read the book, once my mom finishes with it.

You should so get the abridged.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dragonartist22 In reply to Southern00Belle [2011-01-02 15:13:32 +0000 UTC]

That would probably be wise.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Southern00Belle In reply to dragonartist22 [2011-01-02 21:43:42 +0000 UTC]

Well, I don't know. The abridged does take out Fantine's Arrest- or so I've heard, I read the unabridged- which does make her death make a lot less sense.

dragonartist22 In reply to Southern00Belle [2011-01-03 00:17:45 +0000 UTC]

yes...I mean, in order to shorten a book that's that long, chances are that they'd have to cut out a bunch of stuff.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Southern00Belle In reply to dragonartist22 [2011-01-03 01:08:21 +0000 UTC]

You can shorten it quite a bit just by removing everything that's not important to the story.

dragonartist22 In reply to Southern00Belle [2011-01-03 01:16:54 +0000 UTC]

As in, the historical details and stuff? That makes sense. That's the reason I could't make it through "Dracula".

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Southern00Belle In reply to dragonartist22 [2011-01-03 01:27:40 +0000 UTC]

He also goes on rants that don't have much to do with anything. I mean, there's the historical rants, and then there's times we seem to just be reading his diary.

dragonartist22 In reply to Southern00Belle [2011-01-03 21:37:00 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I remember that. The story would probably have been far more interesting if all the information was relevant, at least. I get why he talked about some of the stuff...but the rest, who cares? It didn't help.
Not everyone thinks this, though. My friend had no problem with that. I guess it just depends on the reader.

Southern00Belle In reply to dragonartist22 [2011-01-04 01:06:07 +0000 UTC]

I ended up skipping through most the stuff. And I swear, if I ever have to read about Waterloo again, I am murdering something.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dragonartist22 In reply to Southern00Belle [2011-01-04 22:43:19 +0000 UTC]

XD I skip through a lot of stuff too. But it makes me worry...what if I accidentally skip through something important?! It has happened before, and could definitely happen again.

Southern00Belle In reply to dragonartist22 [2011-01-04 22:45:40 +0000 UTC]

Well, you're familiar with the musical, so if you're suddenly to the chapter equivalent of Come To Me, while you missed the song equivalent of Who Am I, then you'll know to turn back.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dragonartist22 In reply to Southern00Belle [2011-01-04 23:45:53 +0000 UTC]

that's an interesting way to think of it, and it does make sense. My mom tells me that the story-bit that goes with the song Plumet Attack is not in the book at all.

Southern00Belle In reply to dragonartist22 [2011-01-05 01:15:12 +0000 UTC]

Your mother is wrong.
It totally is. The Plumet Attack chapter is one of my favorites, though she technically doesn't scream, so it's understandable why your mother would think it might not be in it.

dragonartist22 In reply to Southern00Belle [2011-01-05 01:30:08 +0000 UTC]

yeah, it's the screaming part that she mentioned to me. okay then.

Southern00Belle In reply to dragonartist22 [2011-01-05 01:33:15 +0000 UTC]

All in all, Eponine is a lot more impressive in the book than she is in the musical. Even her death is cooler.

dragonartist22 In reply to Southern00Belle [2011-01-05 01:40:24 +0000 UTC]

Again, another thing I've heard. My friend - who read it as well - was nearly in tears. Makes me curious...CAN'T WAIT TO READ!!! Eponine is awesome, that's why I just had to draw her before.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Southern00Belle In reply to dragonartist22 [2011-01-05 01:50:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, she's also a bit more crazy in the book.
Huh.
Well, I can't wait to hear what you think of it.
