Description Fan art from the book "Venom and Song" by Wayne Thomas Batson and Christopher Hopper.

The creature is called a Kyrin but is also known as a Death Eater. They are described at the beginning of the book.

This picture took me longer than I expected it to, but mostly because I decided to take time and study the possible anatomy of a dragonesque figure. For instance, even though it might look like the Kyrin has a true collarbone, it actually doesn't (in my picture). Instead, the Kyrin's shoulder blades are attached to the rib area mostly by muscle, like the bone structure of a cat. This helps to make the Kyrin's wings more flexable, and when it flies the shoulder bones can fold up and over the back of it's spine to help it stretch its wings to maximum capacity. This allows the Kyrin a more powerful upward thrust.

However, the Kyrin does have a hip and hip joints. This allows it to anchor it's strength in its spinal column when grabbing prey on the fly.

It was a lot of fun to think about how the bone and muscle structure of such a creature would work. I'd never tried it before, but I believe it helped me draw the character in a more realistic fashion. Enjoy the picture!

A review of the book will be coming soon to www.theravenquill.blogspot.com. Drop by if you are interested.

The shading is amazing. I always make things much much darker than they need be and leave no room for blending.

Also, I think what you did with the skeletal structure is genius.

Thank you. ^_^ The shading was a lot of fun, for sure, and I wanted to get it right so I took my time. The skeletal structure... I don't know why I decided to do that but I enjoyed it. Thank you very much.

It really depends. All kinds, I guess. You can see more of my dragons in my gallery, if you are interested. I've been looking into attempting Chinese dragons, but as of yet nothing has come of it. I'm also working on another dragon head in a more traditional English style, I think.
