Description
The reference was a black and white photo of my Grandmother on my Dad's side, taken when she was quite young.

Basically, what I did was take the photo and apply various different colours to it, one colour per layer, using bucket fill. Afterwards, I erased different parts of each layer to allow the individual colours to show through. Then I merged all the layers, put a clean layer on top, fiddled with the transparency so that I could see the photo underneath, and painstakingly painted it using a Van Gogh-style brush with watercolour paint.

Total time: 6-7 hours.
