Crow isn’t actually a nightwing, he’s a human. His village had constantly been attacked by mountain dragons, and one day, the humans got a way to fight back. They found a person with incredible abilities who was willing to give the best warrior in the town the power to turn into a massive dragon. They chose to make this dragon form as distinctive as possible, so that other dragons would learn to avoid him. That person, was, of course, Crow. They figured that even if the dragons teamed up on him, his superior human intelligence would make him able to outwit them. Unfortunately, Crow would soon learn that dragons are far more than just dumb beasts the hard way.
Crow’s first hint that maybe the dragons were smarter than he thought was when he saw several with armor and spears. At the time though, he was thinking less about that and more about how to fight off all the dragons and keep them away from town. They’d all considered the thought of the dragons trying to gang up on him, but no one had thought that there would be this many. Enough to completely overwhelm him, pin him down, and burn his home to a crisp. Once he saw the arena and elaborate prison, he knew for sure that they had misjudged the intelligence of the dragons. He could get out of his chains by turning back into a human and then into a dragon once more, but every time he tried a mass of skywing guards would just catch him and chain him up again.
After a while of fighting in the arena(note that this was before Peril started fighting in it)Crow made the following judgements: the mountain dragons or “skywings” were sadists who enjoyed other’s pain, the ice dragons weren’t much better but they seemed to hate him in practicular for some reason, and the sand and sea dragons seemed less psychotic but not much better. He started to learn the dragon language, most of what he learned was terms of violence and insults. He fought in the arena for months, quickly becoming the queen’s champion. He tried and tried to get out of this hell, but always got thwarted. Eventually, however, he did meet a young small seawing, and the two of them finally managed to escape…
