Rats for companions,
Mud for beds;
The close call of becoming the dead?
Have you ever heard diminishing minds
of soldiers who lay down their lives:
Ghosts e'er haunting
a crazy mind?
Have you ever heard their mournful cries?
Have you ever seen anger written plain,
On men's faces in ruined lines:
Their morals being slowly slain?
The rampant cries for everything,
Like blood and death, which they say,
Will help them win in every way.
Have you ever smelled the open land,
Where snow has fallen and frozen a body?
Where life stolen becomes ripe?
The gas under which men have sat,
as the writhe under an emerald mat?
Have you ever tasted bitter defeat?
Tasted onion flavored coffee?
The mere point where death creeps up;
Threatening to steal your heart, your mind, your soul, your body.
Have you ever tasted wars bitter coal?
