Interesting. The thing that I get from this is that first off, we have the posed model who is looking in one direction, towards us, somewhere between a 3/4 profile and a full frontal profile. However, with the side light we are getting another impression of the model with the shadow that's thrown into the background. The model in the background seems to be looking away away from us, in a 1/4 profile (unsure of the proper terminology.)

I would suggest that the artist is attempting to capture the yin and yang of the human situation. The duality of man. And no, I haven't watched "Full Metal Jacket" in a while, but I feel that the same thing is here. While we know that the subject in the foreground is male, it seems that the subject in the background is female. We have no qualms shown by the male, except that the light and hair hide his eyes with shadows. But there seems to be no fear on the rest of his face. However, the shadow seems to turning it's head away from us, tossing hair as to hide itself. To cover up the fact that it's laid bare against the wall, and seems to give a sense of femininity.

Now, this is not a critique of the model himself, but just a thought analysis on what the photographer was trying to capture, or may have actually captured through the experiment whether it was meant to be done as such or not.

In looking at the title, it seems that "Joy Division - Shadowplay" seems to work.
