Description okay, Some little while ago - i uploaded a self portrait I had done in college - about 1998 i think it was. But i've gotten so much better at portraits, that i had to redo it to see what would happen. This is the result!

Photo on the far left - old version in the middle - new version on the right

All pencil - various leads 2b - 9b on Hammermill 80lb Bright White cardstock

So yeah, the picture this is based off of was from 12 years ago. There are still issues even with the new picture - in particular i messed up the shape of the glasses from one side vs the other, but no mattr how i tried to fix it, it just wouldn't come out right - however, i believe the end result is pretty darn awesome! and VERY much improved over the old one.

if you recall from the previous version i posted - the teacher didn't even WANT me to use this photo because it was too washed out - but i thought it was the more interesting out of all the choices i had so i did it anyway. i have to admit i added in some contrasts in the hair to give it a little more oomph, but hey, thats what being an artist is all about eh?

btw - that mark on my forehead is NOT a mistake - most pictures these days don't show it, but its actually the freckle right on top of my scar. Also, YES my mouth actually IS that crooked and bumpy - i had stitches in my upper lip when i was young and you can't see the scar above my lip only because of how washed out the photo is.

Both the scars and the bump are no longer AS pronounced as they used to be, age y'know ? but they're still there.

What a unique self portrait! I wonder how it would've turned out had you drawn it live in front of a mirror back then

thanks so very much!
hehe, i don't think i would have had the patience to do that, though when i was younger i did draw portions of myself - like the hand that was drawing was getting drawn. i should find that. i was really proud of that when i did that...i wonder what it looks like now

Wow, great job! I love the dramatic lighting you have going on and the hair is great! If I have one critique (and this could just be my personal opinion so feel free to disagree) it would be that it is ever so slightly too blown out on the lower portion of the face. Maybe you could add just a touch of shadow to define the upper lip and the bottom of the nose a bit more. But that's really nitpicky and I love the portrait!

hehe, thanks very much!

well, the photo i USED is VERY blown out - i actually did attempt to give it a little bit of definition without going overboard since i was trying to stay close to the photo. my teacher had never wanted me to do it to begin with - i do have a piece in here that shows the three stages - photo, original and the revamp.... [link]

but anyway, i ALSO find PLENTY of nitpicky things wrong with this portrait too, but, i'm also very proud of it at the same time - i really appreciate it, thanks! and thanks for the fave!

thanks - i didn't take the photo that i used for this pic though.
i just picked it out of all the others because i DID like the lighting - its was more challenging to do then the other 5 the class photographer took that day.

also, thanks for the fave!!

the shirt, on the other hand, was starting to piss me off!! lol....it looks better when you pull away from it then when you look at it close. i swear.
