“Mm…” Ahmaru’s smile became sad and distant as their infrequent moment of elation together gradually faded under the weight of reality.

“Hey, none of that, Ahmaru,” Reiji said as he cupped the side of the hanyou’s face, tilting it upwards, and gave his lover an encouraging smile. “We’re in this thing together and everything will be fine. I promise.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Yes, I do,” Reiji arched an eyebrow and flicked his thumb against Ahmaru’s plump bottom lip, drawing a reluctant half-smile as the other man pushed his hand away.

“You’re such a dumbass,” Ahmaru grumbled as he tried unsuccessfully to hide his smile.

“Yeah, but ya still love me anyway,” Reiji countered with a smirk, leaning in to kiss Ahmaru before the other could distant himself again. When he pulled back, Ahmaru looked rather dazed for a moment, and damn adorable from Reiji’s point of view.

Much too tired to argue, and taken by the should have been expected but still unexpected kiss, Ahmaru just shook his head before lightly nuzzling Reiji’s cheek in an unusual sign of affection and sighed softly.
