Description I actually started this last summer and it never really got off the ground. I picked it up a few times but couldn't get that flow and thrill you have when you really enjoy a painting.

So. I just made the huge leap from cheap Cotman pan watercolours to Winsor & Newton artists tube watercolours.
I've never worked with tubes before and I'm amazed how vibrant the colours are in comparison.

The scan is far too dark which is irritating, my scanner just couldn't capture the vibrant turquoises, instead making them darker blue hues. When I try and muck about with the colour settings in Photoshop it erases the subtle blending on the face, so this is as good as I could get it.
(Note to self: save up and buy a decent bloody scanner!)

It's not perfect, it's not a seller, it'll probably just go into my sketchbook but I do feel relieved it's not still masking taped to the back of my temporary sketch pad! Finally I can started something fresh without it staring at me.

Thank you to for the main portrait image. She has since taken the reference image off but go check out her stuff and her main photography gallery is amazing.
Little daughters of the sea from my head!

I think it an incredible piece. Having just finish Stardust by Gaiman and earlier some excellent reading of de Lint, I am finding a new interest in Faeries. Most is too cartoonish for my taste, and I don't mean that as a degrading comment, just no other way to say it. But your work has a definite elegance. That and I'm a sucker for brits. ;-p

Excellent image, I'll enjoy looking at the rest of your gallery.

Thanks so much for the interesting comment!
I know what you mean though. I love painting faeries, especially the whimsical side of them, but you can't beat a darker vision. It's more interesting and mysterious sometimes than happy faeries prancing around!

Yeah the colours are very rich. I'm trying out my new tube watercolours. They are rather nice to work with

Ha! Yeah it's been a while. Sadly my job gets in the way of me doing art these days. Sometimes I don't get to paint for weeks or even months which is awful. It's made me realise how much I took for granted when I was at uni and was painting everyday like it was normal. Now it's a luxury!

Yesterday I actually completed two paintings, I uploaded the other one last night. Definitely got to make more time for painting!
Thanks for the lovely comment, it's nice to hear from you

And hearing back from you brings me equal joy. Sorry to hear about that, life getting in the way of art severely sucks. I hope it at least pays well. Good luck, hope you continue to find time from time to time.

That was a lot of times in one sentence...

Yay, I'm the first to comment

This is absolutely beautiful hun I love the way you've blended the blues and greens, and the bubbles are great!

I recently discovered water colours in tubes...the first time I used them was in your picture I've been using water colour pencils for years so I was stunned at the vibrancy of the ones in tubes!

Yet another masterpiece of yours that is going straight into my favourites

I did wonder if you had used tube watercolours for my piece as the colours seemed a lot more vibrant and somehow more substantial than in your other pieces.

The artists ones cost so much more, but now I understand why!
I put way too much in the pallet though so now I'm trying to knock out another painting so I don't waste any of it.

Two paintings in one day. I must be spoiling myself!

Hehe I can't wait to see it!

I'll have to save up to get the paints you have because mine are from a cheap discount store in my town. They seem to do a good job though, although there are limited colours so there's a lot of mixing involved!

If I squeeze out too much paint, I let it go dry and then go over it with water. That makes the paint really thin, but it's good for colour washes and subtle colours and details

I discovered that last night! By the time I got onto the second painting of the day it had all dried out so I thought I'd try and water it down. The paints I bought cost me a small fortune, but it was coming up to my 30th birthday and my old art mentor Lydia (the lady I painted 'Love & Inspiration' for was so appalled when she discovered I was still using Cotman student colours she chucked me £30 towards some new ones and ordered me to go and buy some.

I spent about £60 in total but it was definitely worth it.
I didn't really get what she meant about the difference until I started using them yesterday. Now I wish I'd splashed out ages ago! It's one of those 'never going back' moments!

She told me to buy them from this website: Ken Bromley Art Supplies: [link] and they are definitely cheaper on here than in the art shops. Plus they have a sale on too!
