Description variation 3 # 7: fairy
Takin a break from requests to draw something for myself. Picked up one of my old drawing books "Fantasy Characters" by J Neondragon Peffer, and drew one of her characters. Her work is pretty cool, so you should go to the library and check out some of her books. So I can't say this is my own original design. I can say however, that I took my own liberties to put my own tastes in the picture. The most obvious thing is the color scheme and the textures. The original was a white fairy, with purple hair and red attire that appeared to be made of cloth. I also simplified the picture, added, subtracted and swapped a couple of things to put my twist on it.
I must say though, It was done in both crayola and prismacolor marker, and it represented a challenge. Bought my prismas a couple years back and I had no clue how to use em. Someone even told me to stay away from markers because they are really hard to use. Well, like most of my art supplies I didn't understand, i put them down for a couple of years, practiced with coloring and my art skills, and I started to fiddle with crayola markers. So when I felt confident enough, I began using these again, and it looks like a couple years of hard work finally paid off. So never give up!

Tools of the Trade: Prismacolor marker, Crayola marker, white pen

So here's the question guys- what parts of the picture were done in Crayola? can you tell?

thanks, but I can't take credit for the design of this picture. I got it from another artist It's just the color scheme that is mine. thank you anyways though C:

oh yeah, I did I drew the picture and picked the textures and color scheme with marker I just hate when people take credit for things I do, so i'm really careful about giving people credit for their work c:

Cool drawing, Do the crayola markers ruin your paper? How many layers can it resist? Can you get an even coat of color (no streakyness) Can they blend a bit? I want to use them in my sketchbook for sketches, i don't want them to look professional just good
thank you

dragonwarriorsgalore In reply to MangaArtStudios [2013-04-06 01:01:29 +0000 UTC]

thanks Ok! so a lotta questions xD I don't mind though c: I like questions... so lets see

1. I don't use computer paper, I tend to use sketchbook paper, or higher quality paper like bristol, manga paper, sketchpaper, even white construction paper is better than printer paper.
2. It depends on the type of paper you use? I find that watercolor paper is pretty resistant to if you wanna pile on the layers. But I try to do minimal layers, from darkest to lightest and work quickly, usually three layers max.
3. It's much easier to not get streaking in small areas. this picture is on a regular sized sheet of paper, and her skin areas are pretty small, so it's easy to not streak. Larger areas are more difficult. In some cases streaking can be to your advantage though, like when you wanna go for a textury look like in jeans, or hair
4. Yes they can blend if you look on DA for crayola marker tutorial, this awesome chick who drew this mermaid that's Ariel, does a tutorial so you can see how she blends with cheap markers I do that sometimes but it's very time consuming. It's possible, and it doesn't hurt to have a bit of water to help blend along the way
5. and is money an issue? I know it can be since these things cost money... there are alternative brands that are pretty reasonable. there is an alochol based brand on amazon.com called noir. a 24 pack for just under $40. It's good of course there are brands like dickblick markers that you can find on dickblick.com or utrecht markers at utrecht.com to buy markers for around $2 a marker, which is cheap for professional marker. If you wanna stick to the really cheap stuff, crayola is great Rose art is good too, but it's a little harder to work with :/ a 50 or 64 pack of crayola markers would be great to wwork with

No problem If you can, and you intend to use marker, I strongly suggest those cheap professional brands like dickblick and utrecht. I know dickblick.com has some crazy sales. the other day my friend got a whole bunch of dickblick markers for like 1.75 each! So are you gonna try and get a couple of those, or just stick to your crayolas and rosearts? C:

I think i will stick with the crayola's, i only want to use them in my sketchbook for color reference. I don't plan on making finishd artwork with them, so i go for as cheap as posible

ok well You can still do awesome art with them ^^ and your art is nice too! C: and I get the cheap thing. I saved up money back in highschool and waited til my prismacolors were on sale to buy them. Then the rest of the expensive markers I got were gifts xD lol. Still I wish the best of luck to you!

hat is obviously crayola because they aren't known for highly detailing markers as Prismacolor is.

dragonwarriorsgalore In reply to TimeHeroKaiser [2012-06-24 23:42:08 +0000 UTC]

haha, nice try but no. everything green is prismacolor ^^ everything brown and yellow is crayola, including the skin tone ^^ and part of the hair, tho not all xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimeHeroKaiser In reply to dragonwarriorsgalore [2012-06-24 23:46:23 +0000 UTC]

fair enough, but still. crayola is not pramarialy detailing still. they do have a few detailing markers but not many, only about 30 shades of over the 700 they produce for colors. every 1204 prismacolor markers has a detailing color and every media with a detailing to it. It's a set you buy right from them directly that's about 2 grand buy is 6500 pieces.

That's pretty awesome, but I am a poor college student xD I buy most of my name brand supplies on huge sales xD I use whatever I can get my hands on honestly I find it's not about the brands, but how you use what you have and how to make it work for you ^^ I have seen beautifully done pictures in all cheap markers, and I do that a lot too, but ocassionally i like to whip out the expensive stuff for small pictures ^^ I checked out your gallery, and you are indeed talented xD but it's not all about name brands Here is an example of a work done mostly in crayola marker [link] She is incredibly talented, and if you read her caption she even gives a tutorial on how to use cheap markers like the expensive one. This is the technique i often use with my cheap markers too, and people often can't tell the difference ^^

Actually most my work are done in a F Tichonderoga mechanical pencil or a Generals(TM) 6b graphite pencil.

Darn right! xD I have Prismacolors and one copic marker(bought waaaaay on sale) but I have a lot of crayola and cheap name brands and they work just fine! -w- lol xD not quite xD. The skin tone was done with Crayola's new line of markers. I think they are called the muliti-cultural? O.o Anything Brown in the picture and parts of the hair! xD good guess!bout time crayola came out with a line of markers so I can practice different skin tones xD
