Description
I mentioned that Emma had a friend she escaped with - well, enter friend, Sam! He is Emma's childhood friend and closest support. At their receiving ceremony, he received a Flightcat familiar, Raven. When the evil creature attacked the receiving ceremony and tried to kidnap Emma, he helped her escape by flying away, and thus got swept up in the whole adventure. He provided emotional support to Emma throughout the story, as she dealt with the pressure of being the next Wizard.
I also attempted to write a love story between Emma and Sam - since hey, all the books I read usually ended up with the main gal and guy having a relationship by the end of it. But when I finished writing it, I was struck with the sudden realization - waiiiit, my parents say I shouldn't go on dates until I'm olderrr... and these two characters are twelve... uh... I ended up having a supremely awkward scene at the end of the book where the two of them were like "I really care about you, but since we're twelve let's not date until we are at least 16!" Heheh. Oof. Bless my young writing heart.

On a less awkward note, a fun fact about the way magic works in this world is that it is Blue - the very particular, lapis lazuli-esque shade of blue that I used in these drawings. That's why Emma's magic in the last doodle was blue, as well as Mioza's eyes and the little bubbles of light around Sam and Raven. It can be channeled through a familiar to manifest certain abilities, like Sam's flight, and in a Wizardcat that channel is more freely manipulated. It also functions as a substance - in Wizards and in other varieties of magic-wielders throughout the world of the Catlands, it can be extracted from blood as a blue fluid. The practice of extracting magic is not survivable however, and extremely unethical. Hence a group of evil beings whisking away magical children. Oof.
