That was 'More Tribbles, More Troubles!'  Had the collection of the animated series in paperback and written by Robert Bloch.  In that story, Cyrano Jones had them genetically modified so they wouldn't reproduce.  The problem was that they became hive creatures.  If you shot a big one, it broke into several smaller ones.

Sure explains why they're always P.O.'d with everyone! After all, they know what's being said about them in nearly every language!
Weren't Babel Fish blamed for more wars and destruction since truly open communication meant no forgiveness in negotiations due to there being no room for misinterpretation?

Still, a Wonderful Concept! must've been some KINKY stuff to shock a Klingon Warrior like that!
