While on assignment for Design Green, I got to learn more about the architecture of Singapore. One of the featured subjects was the National Library just across the venue. It was designed by Ken Yeang and T.R Hamzah and features a two 16-storey blocks. It was also one of two buildings able to achieve the highest award for the Green Mark Scheme in 2005. The other building was Nanyang Polytechnic.

The National Library Board committed its new Library as early as the conceptualisation stage to achieve a “green building”. It was designed with the best building orientation and configuration to buffer against direct solar heat, and achieving natural ventilation and daylighting at the same time. Even in the events plaza, an open area between two blocks, it feels cool and windy as the building orientation was designed to bring in natural ventilation. The National Library is also installed with energy efficient devices such as motion sensors and daylight sensors that control the blinds automatically.
