Description NAME:  Atronox
BREATH:  Shadowy webbing that entangles the target and has a soporific effect on those it touches.  Eventually it dissipates.  The membranes of Atronox's "wings" are made of a similar shadowy energy; they coalesce between the dragon's legs when xe  wishes to fly, and they dissolve when xe wishes to walk.
LAIR:  A cave in the wall of a much, much larger cavern (something like a subterranean Grand Canyon) far below ground.  A broad, black river flows through the bottom.  The cavern is home to an entire ecosystem of troglobiontic organisms, most of which are quite bizarre to the eyes of surface dwellers, with chemosynethetic bacteria for producers and a forest of "trees" that are in fact mostly-sessile polychaete worms.  The only dim light present comes from colonies of some such bacteria.  Very rarely, Atronox may take a passage to the surface, emerging to fly nocturnally over a tropical rainforest where xir appearances are known as a rare omen.
HOARD:  The bones and exoskeletons of prey, which xe arranges into semi-abstract sculptures.
NATIVE FORM:  Stygian Widow

Earth, darkness, and Chthonian forces are generally represented by spiders in my mythopoeia, and while I was ultimately unwilling to mine non-reptilian sources of inspiration for the Dragon of Earth , as I felt the classical four elements ought to feel classically draconic, I felt no such compunction with regard to the more ethereal element of Shadow!  So Atronox here is the first actual drakontarachne that I have posted to my gallery!  Xir design is pretty self-explanatory, really.  I used the abdominal horns of Macracantha arcuata but transplanted them to Atronox's head, where I felt they looked quite draconic (and perhaps slightly diabolical).

Besides spiders, the primary influence on xir design was the Shadow Dragons in the second Mega Bloks Dragons movie, Dragons II: The Metal Ages.  I saw those films when I was very small, and the concepts they introduced became such staples of my childhood imaginings that I almost forgot I hadn't invented them, from an alternate DragonWorld of floating rocks, to magical crystals worn on dragons' chests, to devilish Shadow Dragons and resurrected Light Dragons exactly as they appeared in the second film.  To this day, I alone of everyone on Earth maintain that the Mega Bloks Dragons movies are good, dammit!
