I had one. They grow up really big
You used to be able to pick one up for pocket money and I adopted an abandoned one. I had her for years but she got sick and died in the end. By then she was the size of a saucer.

I would love one but the gear I would need costs to much for me at the moment.. They are adorable!

You do need alot of gear. Heaters and filters and UV lights and they make an awful mess in the tank as they grow bigger and the tank has to be upgraded fairly often as they grow. There is an awful lot of work even having just one turtle. I had to brush her back once a week with a toothbrush to get the green off. She seemed to like it, did a funny little dance like it tickled.
They do have personalities though, they are so interesting and they are proper pets... I used to take mine out in the garden for walks around to get the sunlight and she was inquisitive of insects and things that moved. Never took my eyes off her though as they can move quickly on land and I wouldn't want to lose her.
I wouldn't recommend them for pets though. They are rather specialist, costly and messy and time consuming. Unless you are a dedicated chelonia fan that is.

I thought this little guy is a terrapin, it's pretty adorable.
I've been keeping them as pets as I grew up, it's pretty low maintenance too, and then release them back into the wild with other terrapins when they get bigger,
My mom thought that it doesn't seem right to keep it in a small tank once they grew bigger in size.
But I remember I don't spent Β that much amount of money for a starter tank. That is so costly, mine cost about 15-20 Sing dollars or so for the tank.Β
Perhaps it cos of the difference in climate, that you have to spent more to give it adequate heat.
I used pebbles and stones that I found outside to create its environment and fed it with small fish and vegetables and those can food for terrapins for its supplements.Β
I hope you get to keep one, they are really nice as a pet.

I really would love to keep one but I think it is all the heating equipment and lightning that costs the money.. And with me living in the north of England I don't think I could get away without the equipment.

That explained why it is so costly.
They will need a warm environment after all.

aww, it's so cute.Β
You going to get one?Β

dramaticpeanut In reply to SomberOrangeDreams [2016-11-12 02:41:32 +0000 UTC]

I really want one but it depends on how much all the equipment costs to keep them... I saw a starter tank in the pet shop where I took this photo for Β£300 which is a little out of my price range.Β

SomberOrangeDreams In reply to dramaticpeanut [2016-11-12 03:12:04 +0000 UTC]

They can be pretty pricey to take care of unfortunately.Β
I want one too but I have two cats, a dog, a guinea pig and chickens so it's a full house already. lol
Well the chickens aren't in the house.Β Β
