I do believe the theory that possibly the light that lit up was no fancy transition in the story- it could be the thing Greg was referring to in the van, "In the end, Rose could only save a few of her closest friends. Without her shield, I dont know..." meaning that it could of been a literal nuke to the earth to eradicate any possible crystal gems left before abandoning the place.

Yes, exactly! I was thinking of that quote too! Also, I wonder who's side the dreaded Gem was on, the way the scene plays out it's not all together clear wether it was the same gem that mistook her for a crystal and the thought of the crystal gems having a member that was so wild that'd they'd punch any gem with a diamond on their clothes is an intersting angle I'd like to see explored.
