Story by NineyNinetales
Featuring:
Everest 2225  and her handler Benjamin Barnes
and
Ursa 4256  and her handler "The Agent"

Benjamin Barnes had just made his morning cup of coffee, taken a seat at the breakfast nook table and began buttering his toast when his daughter Alice walked in with a piece of paper in her hand.

"Good morning Daddy." She said sweetly to her father and pecked him on the cheek before putting the paper into his hand. "This was in the mail yesterday, sorry I forgot to give it to you yesterday, but you were busy at the time. It seems important."

Alice then went into the kitchen and began to make breakfast, she pulled a carton of fresh brown eggs, and a packet of uncooked bacon from the fridge. "Would you like some eggs and bacon daddy?" She asked, but her father didn't respond. His gaze was on the paper and he was so caught up in reading the important letter that he didn't even hear his daughter's question, there was a slightly look of determination on his face. Alice was a bit surprised when her father didn't answer, she moved over to the breakfast nook table and stood behind her father. "What is it daddy?" She asked trying to lean in close to read what was written there.

"It's a letter from the Researchers at the Tokota Cultural Association, it seems they are in the Tartok mountains, they are trying to study the remaining wild dires there, but the mission is a bit harder then they expected and they are calling for all experienced tokota handlers to come and help." Benjamin replied, putting a hand up to his goatee and rubbing his chin.

"Alice put her hand on her father's shoulder and leaned in closer to read some of the letter, after a moment or two she stood back upright, "Daddy, surely there is no one more qualified then you for such an expedition. And we have Everest. She would be perfect to ride up into the Tartok mountains with you. Are you going to go?" she asked as she move over to sit at the table in the seat across from him.

"Well, I think has a kennel owner and everything that it is my duty to respond to the researchers and come to their aid. And you are right, Everest would be perfect for the journey, and the fact that she is part dire might play into our advantage and draw the elusive wild dires to her out of curiosity. But hmmm....." He said as he sat thinking about it. "I think that it might be a good idea if I go over to the Triple T Ranch and see if Travis Cochrane would be willing to come with me, I think Zuko is old and strong enough for an expedition." And Benjamin went to the door, grabbed his snow boots and began to pull them on, soon he was out the door and in the barn getting everything ready.

Alice was in the house packing all the essentials suck as filling the waterskins and grabbing dried meat from the pantry and putting odds and ends into a care package for her father and Everest. When Alice had enough food for her father and for Everest all packed and ready to go she walked out into the barn, her father was nearly ready. He had Everest all tacked up and was tightening the straps on her saddle. Alice walked over and tucked the food and water into her father's saddle bags.

"I've packed enough food and water to last you and Everest at least a week. Good luck daddy, be careful." She said as she placed her arms around his neck and gave him a tight hug. Benjamin hugged his daughter back then placed a kiss atop her forehead. "Always am!" he said just before putting his boot into the saddle and hopping up onto Everest's back.

Alice ran her hand along Everest's back and neck and up to her head where she stroked the fur behind her ears before moving to stand in front of the large beast, she then placed a kiss onto the tokotas wet nose. "Take care of him Everest, and bring him back to me safe and sound ok girl?" Alice then smiled at the tokota and hugging her around the neck. Alice then pulled a treat out of her pocket and offered it to Everest. Everest rubbed her cheek against the back of Alice's head when the young girl hugged her then goggled the treat up before licking the girl right up her face. She wagged her tiny dire tail and gave a small yip in an attempt to let Alice know that she understood her words and would take care of Benjamin during their adventure into the Tartok mountains. Benjamin then waved to his daughter and gently clicked his heels into the tokota's side and motioned for her to move forwards and began heading towards the Triple T Ranch which was nestled about 22 acres behind their house.

When Benjamin neared Travis's house he noticed that things lay eerily still, Zuko was no where in sight and usually would be barking happily and running up to greet him. When he dismounted Everest and stepped onto his neighbor's front porch he could see a note tapped to the door. Benjamin walked over, took the note from the door and read, "Dear Benjamin, I received a letter of aid from the researchers association and have gone to help. I am sure I will see you there. Safe travels and good luck!"

Benjamin smiled and stuffed the note into his pocket, walked down the steps and mounted Everest again and set out at a fast pace towards the mountains. After about a half a days ride he and Everest finally made it to the base of the Tartok mountains. Benjamin had expected to see loads of other handlers gathering at the base of the mountains or even traveling up the mountain but all he saw was one loan rider on a large dire.

The Rider was a blonde woman with long hair who was dressed in a long sleeved red shirt, white pants and black riding boots. There was nothing strange about her appearance until one's eyes traveled to her face and noticed that she was wearing a black mask with usual red and turquoise markings on it. Benjamin made a clicking noise at Everest and began walking towards the woman when she began waving frantically and pointing at something behind him, then the woman urged her dire into a fast run up the mountain. Benjamin and Everest barely had time to turn around and see what was behind them when a massive gust of wind blew in that nearly knocked Benjamin out of the saddle and with it came a near white out of snow. A massive blizzard began to blow all around them and Everest and Benjamin followed suit and began to race up the mountain after the woman handler and her dire.
