I finally did it! My laptop kept telling me that the partitions were locked when I tried to factory reset, so I wiped the disk. Have linux now. It's not bad, but a lot of programs don't run on linux, going back to w8 (ordering media from Toshiba). I found this image kind of comical so I drew a little sketch. For the record it took about 28 hours to complete.
