It's not armor. It's Kryptonian nanotech fabric. Both recent ACTION COMICS storylines and DC artist Jamal Igle confirmed this. (The suit also materializes sort of Iron Man-esque, negating the need for him to wear it under his clothes.)
In other words, it's not so much protective as it is heraldic.

1. Jamal Igle is merely discussing the creative decisions of Grant Morrison, Jim Lee, George Perez, and Keith Giffen. I don't think that marks him as an "idiot." And frankly, I never thought the new Supersuit looked much like armor, anyway. It always looked like funky alien fabric to me, and it's nice to have confirmation of such.
2. Considering Superman's from an alien culture, is it really such a reach that Kryptonian fabric would have high-tech properties? I'm not seeing the problem here. If anything, it's an example of the old axiom "evolve or die." The franchise has to update and change to keep pace with the times, and this is one of the ways it's doing so. It's also one of the reasons the upcoming movie is going for a much more alien, otherworldly look and feel for its Supersuit. They want Superman to be cool and relevant for today's audience, just as he was when he was first created in the 1930s. There's nothing stupid or inappropriate about that. It's what they have to do if Superman is to remain viable. Staying locked in the 1930s will only lead to Superman becoming irrelevant and consigned to the dustbin of history.
"If it ain't broke don't fix it" has no validity here...or anywhere, for that matter. a long-running pulp franchise has to keep up with the times if it's to remain popular and meaningful.
