He had always loved the mountains. They've always been home to him, just like the sky is for birds or the way the ocean is the home of a dolphin. He's always felt a pull towards those jagged peaks and steep trails, leading to all sorts of new hidden adventures just waiting to be found.
He had hated being dragged away from the mountains as a colt, leaving his birthplace far behind as he trudged along behind his old herd, head drooping and hooves dragging against the ground. His mother had stayed beside him, urging him forwards when his pace would slow considerably. The whole herd had loved those mountains, and he didn't know why his father, the lead stallion, had forced them to move away to someplace new.
His father wasn't an awful stallion per se, and the horses in his band were quite content with following him. He was strong and powerful, and rarely would any bachelor try to take him on. And when they did, they would very quickly be chased away, his father going after them for miles before returning back to his herd.
Lux would oftentimes see his father standing atop a hill or something similar a good distance away, his long dark mane billowing in the wind as he watched over his band. He's a no-nonsense type of horse, a stark contrast to Lux's own personality. And yet his father continued to put up with him, continued to allow him to stay in the herd even after Lux had turned three.
That was a long time ago now, and now that he's his own horse with no one to follow, he returned to the mountains. He isn't sure where he'll go from here, but for now, the mountains on this little island will do.
He currently stands in a little field where all the sharp peaks had dipped down into a small indent where there is a hidden pond and a few trees. Everything is covered in a thick layer of white, fluffy snow, the stuff coming up past Lux's hooves, stopping just below the bend of his legs. And although it's hard to move around, he couldn't be happier.
Lux currently stands at the edge of the mostly frozen pond, drinking the cold water. It stings his teeth and is a nice refresher as he swallows it, the water rushing down his throat and relieving his thirst. He had been traveling for a while now just to get to this little spot. He hadn't even been sure if it would still be here, the place he was born.
There's the sound of a twig snapping, and Lux's ears immediately ping in the direction it had come from. Calmly he raises his head, water dripping from his chin as he stands at attention, lifting his tail slightly and standing just a bit taller. The freshly healed scars stand out against his dark coat, making him look even more of a threat than he probably is.
Out from a group of trees comes another stallion, his gray coat blending in with the winter around. He doesn't immediately notice Lux standing there, his attention focused on the pond before him.
Lux snorts loudly, his breath billowing up into the air as he stamps his hoof against the snow below him. He narrows his eyes as the stallion finally stops and looks up, their eyes locking.
"Ah...didn't think anyone would be here," he says with a sigh of annoyance, flicking his tail.
"Same here," Lux retorts stiffly, lifting his tail even higher. "And I would like it to stay that way. Turn around and find somewhere else to drink, I was here first."
"What is this like, your territory or something?" The bachelor scoffs as he continues walking towards the water, rolling his eyes. "You kids have no respect."
Lux pins his ears, huffing loudly. "I'm warning you, get any closer and I'll beat you into the next sunrise."
"I'd like to see you try."
So Lux lunges forwards, snow flying everywhere as he charges toward the lighter-colored stallion. They clash, both rearing up on their hind legs and kicking out their hooves in an attempt at injuring the other. Lux lets his anger drive him forwards as he relentlessly goes after this stallion, letting out an angry bellow as he reaches forwards, baring his teeth and just missing a bite to the opposing stallion's face.
They drop down and circle one another, squealing and grunting angrily, their tails lashing and their hooves stamping down the snow around them. The gray stallion rushes forwards, half-rearing up. Lux quickly turns and shoves his shoulders up against the stallion, making him stumble backward and almost fall over. Lux doesn't stop his advances as he bucks, kicking out with his back legs, his hoof connecting with the side of the bachelor's leg.
The gray stallion quickly whirls around and bites out, Lux quickly dodging the bite and crashing against his opponent again, their manes flying in the air, their eyes wild as they battle for dominance, neither willing to back down from the challenge at hand.
