Description What originally started out as another installment of work for ~Project-Dream ended up being a remembrance of a sweet girl I rarely ever speak of anymore.

"Ruby" was a rescue case I bought for $300 the winter after my first horse, Belle, passed on. She was a scrawny little thing, her 16 hand body sway-backed, ribby, and sunken in at the hip. No matter how much we fed or wormed her, Ruby never gained a significant amount of weight and was never able to fill out her hindquarters, even after having her teeth floated. Needless to say, she was never the prettiest thing in the pasture, but she was a sweet heart. Each day, she reminded me that I'd done the right thing by bringing her home by showing me the love I needed more than anything in the world.

I only ended up having Ruby for about nine months, but, in that time, she showed me what it truly meant to be thankful and happy.

She was a pretty awesome old girl. One of these days, I'm going to get in touch with the TWHBEA and find out more about her life and the offspring she produced. I'd like to know how all her kids are and how they're doing these days.

Yea, we lost our percheron mare, Anna this year, we were all devastated. So we contacted her breeder and ended up buying two of her daughters.

I would love to have some of my mare's babies. She was such a sweet, level-headed horse and an absolute gem out on the trail.

Thanks! It was a rather tricky one, especially with that long stride in the hind end!

She's already thanked me enough. Each day we spent together was like her own little way of showing me just how much she appreciated my efforts to save her.

You did a beautiful job. I'm glad that this piece turned into something more personal... you always seem to get more satisfaction in the completed piece. The colors are great; they compliment each other so nicely and nothing clashes... very soothing.

I'm glad you think so. I was a little worried about the green overpowering her, but I went with it anyway and ended up with a relatively decent outcome. I might go back and darken it up some on the scan - the real piece doesn't look quite so "sickly."

DreamHorseStudios In reply to DrewTheWolf [2006-06-07 03:42:06 +0000 UTC]

Aww, thank you! The pose was definitely a little bit tricky because there are so many different ways that a Walker can move. Some of them, like Ruby, have very high knee action without a whole lot of swing in the hip while others are a little looser in the forelegs with lots of drive from behind.

You know, earlier, when I mentioned that I should draw one of my horses, I never really intended for it to come out like this. I have absolutely no idea where in the heck I possibly came up with the idea to draw my Ruby, but I think it's fitting. This is the best I can do for her without photographs.

i think you did a great job. the poor thing deserves to have her story heard, and that's always easier with the help of pictures.

She was a good girl. Well bred and extremely easy to ride (I only rode her after checking with the vet at least three times - she seemed so fragile...) She was never this animated in her gait, but she could still strut her stuff just like the best of 'em when she felt like it. Most horses had to canter to keep up with her at the running walk!

I was just a wee little tiny pipsqueak at the time. From what I've noticed, lots of Tennessee Walking Horses are prone to going way down hill in their old age, but lots of veterinarians will clear them for light work as long as they pass certain tests. I don't think I ever did anything more than walk and running walk (the TWH equiv. of the trot.)
