About the image:
The arch is part of a beautiful water tower, from Stirbey Domain, Buftea, Romania. The tower makes me think of Rapunzel. Sadly it is surrounded by very old and very tall trees and it is impossible to take a clear shot with all of it framed in one picture, and that is very sad because it has great potential and it could be used in so many ways.

Only 20 kilometres away from Bucharest, in the town of Buftea, there is a family property, the Ştirbei Domain, with a palace in the middle. Initially designed as a turret with two exit tunnels, the 1850 construction underwent many important changes over time. Alexandru, the son of Barbu Ştirbei, completed the construction (in 1863), referring to a trendy architectural style in those times, the Tudor style.
The Buftea domain also includes a superb garden, where a splendid chapel with altar and repository was built, the Holy Trinity Chapel. Here there is the tomb of Ruler Barbu Ştirbei,that of his son Alexandru, and of other family members.

The water tower lies in the north-eastern part of the park and was build in 1920 after the plans designed by Anghel Saligny architect, being used to ensure the water needs of Ştirbey family. It is distinguished by that age architecture, being decorated with classical elements that make an important architectural object out of a strictly industrial building
As a little sidenote, Anghel Saligny is considered up until this day the greatest architect Romania ever had.
The characteristic feature of the water tower consists in its architecture that hides the re-enforced concrete skeleton through a simple classic order. As a whole, the architectural composition respects the three elements: base, spindle, capital, succession frequently met in all sorts of public buildings. The ground floor represents the bed-plate of the tower. The main part, developed on four floors, has as central architectural element the pilaster, which is placed in front of every structure’s pillar. The links between the pilasters are made of overlapped arches. This order is developed on four floors, except the ground floor, and is ended with an intermediary attic. The upper part of the water tower is design with a totally different classic decoration, made of a discreet, embossed, low sized pilaster and a new division of the surface between the pilasters.
