1. Nightmare Moon is an alicorn according to canon
2. Read the fanfic.
3. Luna, Nightmare Moon, and Thunderlane are all dark colored ponies that are canon. Although bright coats are common, the rule is pale colors. If Nyx was like, BLACK, it would look weird.
4. Every pony in the series (aside from background ponies) have unique eye shapes. Read the fanfic.
5. No matter how unusual a pony looks, it all depends on a story. They could be an alicorn with rainbow hair, and be the princess of creativity, but as long as they have logical reasons behind their appearance they can work. A mary-sue is aΒ character who seemingly has no weaknesses, not a creative character. What most people can't see is that characters like Nyx are the best ocs. The key to a good OC is slightly bending the rules to get a unique character, but without breaking the rules. Glow-in-the-dark rainbow ponies with pirannah plant tails and goat ears completely demolish the rules xD Nyx however, makes complete sense; and seeing as she was gravely injured at one pointΒ and has a soft spot for those she loves, is not an invincible all-powerful mary-sue.

Whether or not a pony is a mary sue isn't based on the appearance of that pony. It's the personality and abilities that can make a pony a mary sue or not.
Alicorn? --> This may be unnatural but in Nyx' case, it is logical due her unusual "birth".
Nightmare Moon as a Filly? --> Nyx isn't a filly version of NNM.
Unnatural base colors? Unnatural eye shape/form? --> Already explained.

Nyx is adopted daughter of Twilight, but she's also a reincarnation of Nightmare Moon. A cult used a ritual to give her a body separate from Luna, but their spell got interrupted. That's how Nyx came to exist.

These images piqued my interest in reading 'Past Sins' but it was after getting a nod on the Bronyville podcast for the third week in a row that I decided to stop everything and give it a shot. I started last night with the plan to read two chapters a night including the prologue.
I'm now at chapter 10.
So much for that plan...
The story's so rich, so soul warming, it's impossible to pace myself and schedule it accordingly! So if people are wondering if they should check it out, if it's worth a shot, take it from me. It's impossible to dislike.

It's amazing isn't it?! I'm in the works of making a flash music video for it. So far it's been the longest and hardest project I've ever taken on... But if it turns out good enough then it'll be worth it. Seriously though, best fan fic I've ever read about anything.

I actually just read that earlier today, and while I found it very enjoyable, I have to say I didn't find it to be quite as... extraordinary as I was expecting. Perhaps I just haven't read hard enough?

Oh, I liked the story and I easily gave it five stars just for the sheer amount of d'aww in the sixth chapter.
I just thought that these pictures of Nyx contributed just as much to my liking of the story as the writing itself, if not a little more.
